Edfu is renowned for the Ptolemaic Temple of Horus and the ancient settlement of Tell Edfu. Approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) south of Edfu, remnants of ancient pyramids can be found. The Temple of Khnum was dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god Khnum, who was revered as the creator of both male and female deities. In his form as Khnum-hapi, he rejuvenated the Nile’s springs annually to cause the Nile Flood. Additionally, his wife Menhit, the city goddess Neptu, and the gods Heka and Neit were venerated. The open-air temple is located nine meters below street level in Esna, within an excavated depression. Stairs provide access to the temple entrance.
