Exploring Ecuador: From Volcanic Peaks to Colonial Charm

Ecuador’s diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity have always intrigued me. The Quito to Cuenca Tour promised an adventure through Cotopaxi, Quilotoa, Baños, and Chimborazo, and it delivered an unforgettable experience.

A Journey Through Ecuador’s Majestic Landscapes

As a biologist and environmental activist, my heart beats for the wild and untamed. Ecuador, with its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes, has always been on my radar. When I heard about the Quito to Cuenca Tour and its promise of exploring Cotopaxi, Quilotoa, Baños, and Chimborazo, I knew it was an adventure I couldn’t miss.

Our journey began in the early hours of the morning, as we set off from Quito towards Cotopaxi National Park. The sight of the towering Cotopaxi volcano, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The open landscapes stretched out before us, a reminder of nature’s grandeur and the delicate balance we must strive to protect. Walking around the Limpiopungo Lake, I couldn’t help but marvel at the diverse flora and fauna that call this place home.

The Enchanting Beauty of Quilotoa and Baños

Next, we ventured to the breathtaking Quilotoa Lagoon. Nestled within a volcanic crater, the turquoise waters of the lake shimmered under the sun, creating a scene that felt almost otherworldly. The hike down to the lake was invigorating, but the climb back up was a challenge. Opting for a horse ride added a touch of adventure to the ascent, and as we trotted up the steep path, I felt a deep connection to the land and its history.

Our journey continued to the vibrant town of Baños, where the Pailón del Diablo waterfall awaited. Despite the rain, the sheer power of the waterfall was mesmerizing. The mist enveloped us, a reminder of the raw power of nature. The cable car ride over the Pastaza River was a thrilling experience, offering a bird’s-eye view of the lush landscape below. And of course, no visit to Baños would be complete without a swing at La Casa del Árbol, where the thrill of swinging into the clouds was both exhilarating and humbling.

Chimborazo’s Majesty and Cuenca’s Charm

The final leg of our journey took us to Mount Chimborazo, the highest mountain in Ecuador and the closest point on Earth to the sun. The ascent was challenging, with biting winds and frigid temperatures, but the views from the top were worth every step. The sight of vicuñas and alpacas grazing in the Chimborazo Faunistic Reserve was a testament to the resilience of life in such harsh conditions.

Our adventure concluded in the charming city of Cuenca, where the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, captivated us with its colonial architecture and vibrant culture. The New Cathedral, with its stunning blue domes, stood as a symbol of the city’s rich history and enduring spirit. A visit to El Cajas National Park was the perfect way to end our journey, as we hiked through misty trails and marveled at the park’s ethereal beauty.

Ecuador’s landscapes are a testament to the power and beauty of nature, and this journey was a reminder of why I dedicate my life to conservation. The Quito to Cuenca Tour offered an unforgettable experience, one that I will carry with me as I continue to advocate for the protection of our planet’s precious ecosystems.
