• East London City Hall - Constructed in 1897, the splendid City Hall, as it is known today, stands between Oxford Street and Argyle Street, showcasing a distinctive Victorian architectural style. Its deep oxblood walls contrast with stark white columns and bold, romantic arched windows.

East London City Hall majestically overlooks the city streets, exuding drama and grandeur. Built during Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, the impressive clock tower was named Victoria Tower in her honor. At that time, much of Africa was under English colonial rule. The City Hall was completed in 1899. This structure was recognized as a National Monument until 1914, when East London was officially declared a city, and it became the official City Hall. A notable feature of this attraction is the marble tablets in the vestibule, which bear the names of white soldiers who died in the frontier wars.

  Residents of East London often mention their museum and the coelacanth together, and for good reason. Established in 1921, it is considered one of the most fascinating natural and cultural history museums in the country. The East London Museum boasts numerous fine exhibits, including an extensive collection of beadwork related to the Xhosa-speaking people.

The East London Natural History gallery features the original coelacanth, a prehistoric fish that has inhabited the Indian Ocean for 400 million years and was thought extinct until rediscovered in 1938. The discovery of a live coelacanth in East London harbor was internationally acclaimed as the most significant zoological find of the century, making the East London Museum, open every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday, a must-visit to see this specimen alone.

The museum also houses other galleries. The border gallery offers a detailed depiction of the region’s history, including displays of southern Nguni beadwork and traditional culture. The costume gallery is a delightful experience with period settings from the Late Victorian era to the 1930s Art Deco style. The maritime gallery features model ships and shipwreck artifacts.

The East London Museum is located in upper Oxford Street. It is also home to the world’s only surviving Dodo egg and a reconstruction of the flightless bird that once lived on the island of Mauritius, standing about a meter tall. Believed to be related to pigeons and doves, it has been extinct since the mid-to-late 17th century.

• Nahoon Estuary Nature Reserve - Established in 2004, the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve holds a significant treasure discovered in 1964. Two municipal workers resting in Bat’s Cave noticed human footprints and animal tracks on the cave’s roof. They reported this to the East London Museum, which confirmed them as ancient fossils of a child’s prints, two antelopes, and a bird, dating back approximately 124,000 years, although there is some debate about this dating. These are the oldest known human footprints, making the Nahoon area highly significant. The cave roof has since collapsed, but the rocky slab with these perfectly preserved prints is now displayed at the East London Museum.
