Nurek - Points of interest include the central avenue of Nurek and the Museum of the Hydroelectric Power Station.
At this museum, visitors can gain detailed insights into Nurek and its hydroelectric power station. - Nurek Dam - The Nurek Dam and hydroelectric station is a colossal earth-fill dam situated in a deep gorge at 38.3715 N, 69.3492 E, on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan. Standing at 304 m (984 ft), it was the tallest dam in the world as of 2008. Presently, the dam accounts for 75% of the country’s total electricity production (3.0 of 4.0 Gigawatts) and meets over 90% of its power requirements. Construction began in 1961 and concluded in 1980, during Tajikistan’s time as a Soviet Union republic. The extensive construction effort was similar to other Soviet Central Asian earth-dam projects, necessitating the creation of a large town near the dam and a prolonged movement of earth and relocation of workers.

Nurek Dam - Attractions include the Nurek reservoir-waterfall and swimming pool (swimming).
The Nurek Reservoir is the largest in Tajikistan, with a capacity of 10.5 km2. It stretches over 70 km (40 mi) in length and covers a surface area of 98 km2 (38 sq.mi). The reservoir supplies the hydroelectric plant within the dam, and the stored water is also used for irrigating local agricultural land. Irrigation water travels 14 kilometers through the Dangara irrigation tunnel to irrigate about 700 km2 (300 sq.mi) of farmland.
The reservoir is a favorite among boaters, as its creation has opened up vast areas for easy exploration by boat. The center of the lake offers a stunning view of the surrounding vast gorges and snow-capped peaks. Numerous houseboats are anchored in rocky niches throughout the reservoir’s many valleys, providing opportunities for swimming.
