Embrace the Chill: A Cozy Winter Weekend in Dunedin

Dunedin, a city that effortlessly marries history with natural beauty, offers a unique winter experience that invites you to embrace the chill and explore its indoor wonders. As the overcast skies and the likelihood of rain and snow set the scene, there’s no better time to delve into the city’s rich heritage and cozy retreats.

Begin your weekend with the Heritage Highlights Walk through Dunedin’s splendid Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Scheduled for the afternoon of June 7th, this one-hour walking tour is a perfect introduction to the city’s historical charm. As you stroll through the Octagon, you’ll learn about Dunedin’s evolution from its pre-Colonial days to the bustling university town it is today. The tour offers a comprehensive overview of the city’s fortunes, reflected in its standout buildings like St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Dunedin Railway Station.

“A great way to see and learn about Dunedin. Highly recommend. - A great morning with Athol. He met us right on the allocated time and then for around 2.5 hours he shared his knowledge of, and love for Dunedin. He was so knowledgeable and able to share many personal experiences with us. Time did not see to be an issue. There were only the two of us and in no way did we at any time feel rushed. he was very considerate of our age and made sure we had no issues. Found a great coffee shop for us to have a short break on the way around. That in itself was interesting as he was able to show us the alterations to the building while keeping the exterior in keeping with other surrounding buildings. Highly recommend for anyone exploring Dunedin as a good first stop to get oriented then having the opportunity to spend more time in areas of special interest later.” - Reviewed at 2025-03-08

As the day progresses, take shelter from the cold in one of Dunedin’s many cozy cafes or eco-friendly lodges, where you can warm up with a hot drink and reflect on the architectural wonders you’ve just explored.

Discover Māori Navigation and More

On June 8th, as the rain subsides and the skies remain overcast, embark on the Dunedin History Tour to uncover the fascinating insights into Māori navigation. This morning tour, starting at 11:00 AM, offers an in-depth look into the human history of New Zealand, focusing on the remarkable navigation skills of the Polynesians who reached New Zealand with incredible precision.

Travel in comfort as you explore Dunedin’s major attractions in a modern minibus, passing iconic buildings and scenic viewpoints on the Otago Peninsula. The tour includes a visit to Baldwin Street, the world’s steepest street, and concludes with a guided walk at the University of Otago, New Zealand’s oldest university.

“Jono was fabulous - We went on an In-Depth Blue Penguins tour with Jono the night before. Love it! We later found out Jono also run this Dunedin city sights tour. He is very knowledgeable and we learnt a heap about Dunedin’s wildlife and its history, both Māori and European. And the provided lunch was a fantastic touch. Vehicle was spacious and clean inside and out. Fully recommend.” - Reviewed at 2025-05-12
