- The Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance - The Twilight at The OPERA tour offers a special chance to explore the nature reserve at sunset. Similar to the daytime penguin tours, this experience provides New Zealand’s most exclusive opportunity to observe the endangered hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) in their natural environment.
This 90-minute guided tour is divided into three segments. Participants start in a theatre setting, where they gain insights into the hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) and the conservation efforts dedicated to their protection.
Next, visitors proceed to the rehabilitation center, where they can see hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) and other penguin species up close (when the birds are under care). The tour concludes with a brief bus ride into the reserve, followed by a guided nature walk of approximately 2km (1.25 miles). During this walk, there is a chance to encounter a variety of plants and animals, including yellow-eyed penguins, little penguins, fur seals, sea lions, and several species of shore and land birds, all residing within the reserve.

During certain times of the year, this period offers the best chance to observe hoiho | Yellow-eyed Penguins in their natural habitat as they return from a day of foraging at sea. Additionally, there are opportunities to see other unique wildlife, including fur seals, sea lions, shore and land birds, native fauna, and more within our exclusive reserve.
