Situated at the entrance of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, close to Pile Gate, this impressive circular fountain exemplifies the city’s historical infrastructure and architectural splendor.
Built in 1438 by the esteemed Italian engineer Onofrio della Cava, the fountain was part of an intricate water supply system that transported water from a spring over 7 miles away. Despite sustaining damage from an earthquake in 1667 and the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s, the fountain has been meticulously restored and continues to function as a public water source, providing refreshing water to both locals and tourists.

Erected in 1418, the column features a statue of the medieval knight Orlando (or Roland), a legendary figure symbolizing the freedom and strength of Dubrovnik. Made of limestone, the column stands 17 feet tall and was traditionally used as a site for public announcements, a symbol of justice, and a unit of measurement for local cloth sellers. Rich in folklore and history, the Orlando Column remains a lasting symbol of Dubrovnik’s cultural heritage and resilience.

Named after Dubrovnik’s renowned poet Ivan Gundulić, the square transforms into a bustling market each morning. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample one of Dubrovnik’s traditional sweets offered at one of the farmers market stands.
