Located in the iconic Dubai Creek area, this museum offers visitors a chance to delve into the rich history of Dubai. It was developed as part of an initiative to transform the creek into a hub of culture and tradition.
The Shindagha Museum narrates the universal story of human innovation, resilience, and the pursuit of progress that has shaped modern-day Dubai. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the authentic Emirati culture and its roots. The museum also emphasizes Dubai’s shared heritage with the region and the world.
“We may not live for hundreds of years, but the products of our creativity can leave a legacy long after we are gone.”
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
- Saruq Al Hadid Archaeology Museum - Discover the first in a series of museums transforming Dubai’s historical district into a vibrant cultural zone. Situated in the historic Shindagha district, it offers a perfect opportunity to explore old Dubai. Pair it with a traditional abra ride across the creek or a visit to the souks.
The exhibits here were discovered at an archaeological site on the edge of the Rub Al-Khali desert, found by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum during a helicopter flight. Since then, archaeologists and historians have uncovered thousands of iron tools, stoneware, bronze pots, precious beads, gold jewelry, and fossils, now displayed at the museum.
Meaning “The Way of Iron,” the Saruq Al-Hadid museum highlights the era of metalworking, with artifacts preserved in excellent condition. Visitors can even participate in a simulated archaeological dig, and children can follow gallery trails to explore history.
- Crossroad of Civilizations Museum (CCM) - This private museum in the Shindagha Historic District offers a captivating look at Dubai’s historical role as a trading link between East and West. It showcases hundreds of artifacts from the Ubaids, Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, and other civilizations that passed through the region.
Highlights include a 7500-year-old bull-shaped vase, a 16th-century Kaaba curtain, and a first edition of the 1590 book that first mentions ‘Dubai’. Other galleries feature swords, daggers, and historical weaponry used across the region.
- Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum’s House - Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House is a historic building and former residence of Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, a former ruler of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The building is situated along the Dubai Creek in the Al Shindagha area.
- Camel Museum - Housed in the ‘Rekab House’ (camel house), the museum was originally a camel stable for the sheikhs. When restored, its architectural design was preserved to become a camel museum. This unique house explains the history and significance of camels, showcasing breeds like the Saleel, Faseel, Naqah, and Hewar used by the Bedouin people as desert ships.
- The Dubai Heritage Village - Established in 1997 in the Al Shindagha Historical Neighborhood in Dubai, near the Diving Village, the Heritage Village hosts heritage events and presents a vivid image of traditional life in the UAE. It represents the elements of wild, marine, and mountain life, allowing visitors to closely observe the traditional customs of the country, the unique features of old houses, handicrafts, and lifestyles. It is owned and managed by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. Operating hours at Dubai Heritage Village are Sunday to Thursday, 8:00-22:00, and Friday and Saturday from 3:00 to 22:00.
