A Journey to the Garden City

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can captivate both adults and children alike. When I heard about the Al Ain City Tour from Dubai, I knew it was something I had to try. The idea of exploring a city known as the “Garden City” with its lush palm forests and natural springs was too enticing to pass up.

Our day began with a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Dubai to Al Ain. The journey itself was a refreshing escape from the bustling city, offering glimpses of the UAE’s diverse landscapes. Our guide was knowledgeable, sharing insights about the region’s history and culture, although the van’s microphone had some issues, making it a bit challenging to catch every word.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the sight of the Camel Race Track. Watching these magnificent creatures in action was a thrilling experience, and my kids were absolutely fascinated. The camel market was another highlight, offering a glimpse into traditional Arabic culture. The lively bargaining and the variety of camels, from young racers to majestic studs, made for an unforgettable experience.

Exploring Al Ain’s Rich Heritage

Our next stop was the Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage site that spans over 1,200 hectares. Walking through the oasis, surrounded by over 147,000 date palms, was like stepping into another world. The kids loved exploring the palm farms, and it was a great opportunity to teach them about sustainable farming practices.

Unfortunately, the Al Ain National Museum was closed for renovations during our visit, which was a bit of a letdown. However, the Al Ain Palace Museum more than made up for it. The museum, once the residence of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, offered a fascinating glimpse into the life of the UAE’s founding father. The kids were particularly intrigued by the traditional architecture and the stories of the royal family.

A quick stop at the Al Jahili Fort provided a perfect photo opportunity. The fort, one of the UAE’s most significant structures, stood proudly against the backdrop of the desert landscape. It was a moment that truly captured the essence of Al Ain’s rich history.

Ascending Jebel Hafeet

Our final destination was Jebel Hafeet, the second-highest peak in the UAE. The drive up the mountain was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Unfortunately, the fog limited our view from the top, but the experience was still exhilarating.

Despite the weather, the kids enjoyed the sense of adventure, and it was a great opportunity to discuss the geological history of the region. Our guide shared stories of the significant fossil discoveries made in the area, adding an educational twist to our mountain adventure.

As we made our way back to Dubai, I reflected on the day’s experiences. The Al Ain City Tour was a perfect blend of culture, history, and adventure, offering something for everyone in the family. It was a reminder of the diverse beauty of the UAE and a testament to the enriching experiences that travel can offer.
