The allure of Rioja’s vineyards beckoned me, promising an intimate wine and dine experience. As a seasoned traveler and wine enthusiast, I was eager to explore the depths of this renowned wine region.
A Journey Through Rioja’s Vineyards
The allure of Rioja’s vineyards had long beckoned me, and the promise of an intimate wine and dine experience was irresistible. As a seasoned traveler and wine enthusiast, I was eager to explore the depths of this renowned wine region. The day began with a sense of anticipation as we embarked on the Rioja Wine Tour with our guide, Martin, whose reputation for knowledge and passion preceded him.
Our first stop was the Ostatu Winery, a family-owned estate nestled in the picturesque town of Samaniego. The moment we arrived, we were enveloped in the warmth of Lucila Rodríguez Canle’s hospitality. Her genuine welcome set the tone for a tasting that was both enlightening and indulgent. The wines, a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, danced on the palate, each sip revealing layers of complexity. The experience was a testament to the Sáenz de Samaniego family’s dedication to quality and their deep-rooted connection to the land.
The Heart of Rioja: Gómez Cruzado
Our journey continued to the historic Bodegas y Vinedos Gomez Cruzado, where we were greeted by the passionate Mikel Ruiz De Vinaspre García. His enthusiasm for the Rioja region was infectious, and as he guided us through the winery, his love for his craft was evident in every word. The tasting was a revelation, with the Gómez Cruzado Haro Rioja Reserva 2019 standing out as a particular favorite. The wine’s rich, velvety texture and nuanced flavors were a perfect reflection of the region’s unique terroir.
As we savored each glass, Mikel shared stories of the winery’s history and its commitment to preserving the essence of Rioja Alta. The experience was both educational and deeply satisfying, leaving us with a newfound appreciation for the art of winemaking.
A Culinary Finale in Labastida
The tour culminated in the charming village of Laguardia, where Martin’s storytelling brought the medieval streets to life. His insights into the Basque history and culture added depth to our exploration, making each cobblestone and ancient wall resonate with stories of the past.
Lunch at a family-owned restaurant in Labastida was the perfect conclusion to our day. The rustic setting and authentic Riojan cuisine were a feast for the senses. The lamb chops, grilled to perfection on ‘sarmiento’, were a highlight, their smoky flavor a delightful complement to the wines we had enjoyed throughout the day.
Martin’s passion for the Basque region, having grown up in San Sebastian, was evident in every aspect of the tour. His engaging personality and depth of knowledge made the experience unforgettable, leaving us with memories to cherish and a desire to return to this enchanting corner of Spain.
