Dongcheng’s Cloudy Weekend: A Cultural Odyssey in Beijing
Experience a weekend in Dongcheng, Beijing, where history and culture come alive under the warm, cloudy skies. From exclusive tours of the Forbidden City to serene walks in the Summer Palace, this journey offers a rich tapestry of tradition and modernity.
Morning Mystique: The Forbidden City and Beyond
As the sun rises over Beijing, casting a gentle glow through the overcast skies, the city awakens with a sense of history and grandeur. Begin your journey at the heart of China’s imperial past with a VIP Tour of the Forbidden City and the Badaling Great Wall Ruins. This exclusive tour, starting at 8:30 AM, offers a rare glimpse into the treasures of the Ming and Qing dynasties. With privileged access to the Treasury Gallery and the Clock Exhibition Hall, you’ll be surrounded by artifacts that whisper tales of emperors and empresses.
The Forbidden City, a sprawling complex of palaces and gardens, is a testament to China’s architectural prowess. As you wander through its halls, imagine the lives of those who once walked these paths. The Nine Dragon Screen and the Palace of Heavenly Purity are just a few of the highlights that await you. A review from 2018 captures the essence of this experience:
Majestic palace - Super crowded even on a Thursday. There were benches provided for seniors to rest. Must have a guide otherwise the history and heritage value will be lost. Wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat. (Reviewed at: 2018-10-03)
After exploring the Forbidden City, the tour takes you to the less-traveled Badaling Great Wall Ruins. Here, the ancient stones tell stories of defense and perseverance. The climb may be steep, but the panoramic views are worth every step. As one traveler noted in 2016:
The tour was announced as taking place when at least two passengers registered. It turned out that we were the only ones who had booked that tour that day. I was concerned that this could reduce the quality of the service, but I was mistaken. We had our very private tour with our own tour guide Jacky Lee and driver in an air-conditioned limousine. The guide provided a lot of details while visiting Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. On our wish he focused on the Treasure Gallery there. The Peking-duck lunch was good and provided you with some insights in the peculiarities of the Chinese cuisine. The day was a public holiday with loads of tourists at the Great Wall. Since the motorway was almost blocked, the tour guide redirected the tour to a lesser known part of the Wall that had also much fewer tourists and was more scenic. The Wall was much more steeper there, too. It was also a hot day at the beginning of August, and temperatures reached 38 degrees centigrade. It took us 1 1/2 hours to reach the top of the mountain and to return. However, we were rewarded with a most impressive view of the area with the winding wall on top of the ridge. We also visited a silk and a jade manufacture and a tea ceremony shop. I acquired a silk gown and a jade ball of life’’, which symbolizes three spheres of prosperous successive generations. In the tea shop I came across Pu-erh tea for the first time. This tea comes from Yunnan and is from the same tea leaves as green tea. The difference is that Pu-erh undergoes a fermentation and oxidation process over many years I bought a ten year old block. The ferments include peptide-blockers which prohibit the storage of fat in the fat cells of the human body, for which the tea is also called slimming tea’’. This effect is confirmed by chemists. Afternoon Serenity: The Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven
As the day progresses, the clouds provide a gentle shield from the sun, making it an ideal time to explore Beijing’s serene landscapes. The Heritage Tour of the Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Starting at 9:00 AM, this tour immerses you in the imperial legacy of Beijing.
The Summer Palace, with its vast gardens and serene lakes, is a masterpiece of Chinese landscape design. As you stroll through the Long Corridor, adorned with intricate paintings, you’ll feel a sense of peace and wonder. The Tower of Buddhist Incense offers breathtaking views of the surrounding pavilions and willow-lined shores. A recent review from April 2025 highlights the experience:
Awesome trip! Special Thanks to Yan. - Superb experience. We have a great guide, Yan. She is punctual and efficient. Started the tour at 9am (on time) and ended at 5pm. A full 8 hours solid tour. Learnt more about the places visited, story behind the scene and etc. Most importantly, Yan offered her help and assist us to take lots of good photos! Awesome! Above all, we also met a few new friends, from KL, Penang and Texas! What a fruitful day! (Reviewed at: 2025-04-01)
The Temple of Heaven, a quintessential example of Chinese ritual architecture, is a place of spiritual significance. Here, emperors once prayed for good harvests, and the echoes of their rituals can still be felt. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, with its three-tiered structure, is a marvel of design and symbolism. As you stand on the Circular Mound Altar, you’ll feel a connection to the cosmos and the ancient traditions that shaped this land.
Evening Reflections: A Culinary Journey
As the sun sets over Beijing, the city transforms into a tapestry of lights and flavors. After a day of exploration, indulge in a culinary journey that celebrates the rich tapestry of Chinese cuisine. The Peking duck banquet, included in the VIP Tour, is a feast for the senses. This traditional dish, with its crispy skin and succulent meat, is a testament to Beijing’s culinary heritage.
As you savor each bite, reflect on the day’s adventures and the stories that have unfolded. The warmth of the meal and the camaraderie of fellow travelers create a sense of belonging and connection. Whether you’re sharing tales of the Great Wall or the serene beauty of the Summer Palace, these moments are what make travel so enriching.
In the words of a traveler from July 2016:
We had the most amazing tour with our personal guide (Sue Lyn) and driver. We enjoyed Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, went to a climb the Great Wall. Our guide even arranged a special lunch for my husband who has a very limited diet, while I enjoyed a very tasty Peking duck that was delicious! (Reviewed at: 2016-07-02)
