- Lake Assal - On our way to Lake Assal, we will pause for a photography break at Dimbya, known as the Grand Canyon of Djibouti. This significant site marks the beginning of the Grand Rift Valley on the African continent. The trip from Arta to the Dimbya canyon takes approximately one hour.
Continuing towards Lake Assal, we will stop for another photography break at the panoramic viewpoint over the bay of Ghoubet El Kharab. This vast bay features a large hill-shaped crater known as Devil’s Island. The name Ghoubet El Kharab translates to “abyss of the demon” in Arabic, and the guide will explain its significance on-site. This stop will take about 25 minutes.
- Lake Assal - Upon arrival at Lake Assal, you will find one of the most remarkable lakes in the world. It is the lowest point in Africa and the third lowest point globally, following the Dead Sea and Death Valley. You will have the opportunity to walk on the salt crust and experience floating. Additionally, you can observe the nomads engaging in the traditional salt caravan, a cultural practice of the Afar tribes. Finally, you will visit a thermal water point where a fish spa allows small fish to gently exfoliate your feet.
- Ghoubet-el-Kharab - After visiting Lake Assal, we will drive to the Ghoubet El Kharab bay beach for a lunch break. Following lunch, we will explore the surrounding landscape, including volcanic craters and frozen lava fields. Witness the separation of the African and Arabian tectonic plates and explore the frozen lava tunnels. Climb the Ardoukoba volcano crater for breathtaking views of the salt flats and the mesmerizing Ghoubet El Kharab, also known as the “abyss of the demon,” a favorite of Jacques Cousteau.

This circuit stands out for three distinct features: it not only takes you to the lowest point in Africa, but also allows you to explore the traditional salt caravan practices of the Afar tribes and engage with the local culture. Most importantly, you can witness the separation of tectonic plates, a one-of-a-kind geological phenomenon, even with the naked eye in the open air.
