After departing from the hotel at 8:30, there will be a 45-minute drive to the trailhead located just outside the picturesque Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, at an elevation of 2,980 meters.
The initial kilometer of the hike is moderately steep, ascending into the glacial trough—a wide, flat-bottomed valley shaped by what was once the southernmost valley glacier in the northern hemisphere.
The path continues up the valley to the edge of the glacial moraine, a collection of boulders left by the now-vanished glacier.
Here, surrounded by towering walls that protect the mountain’s main summit, a picnic lunch will be enjoyed. Options will be discussed for either extending the hike into the moraine’s boulder field, climbing above the valley to create a loop, or retracing the path with ample leisure time on the return.
