Dolphins and Coral: A Snorkeling Adventure in Kenya’s Kisite Marine Park

Eager to explore the vibrant marine life of Kenya, I embarked on the Pilli Pipa Dhow snorkeling adventure in Kisite Marine Park. Join me as I recount a day filled with dolphins, coral reefs, and a taste of Swahili hospitality.

Setting Sail on the Pilli Pipa Dhow

Our adventure began with a prompt 8:15 AM pickup from our hotel in Diani Beach. Muhammad, our amiable driver, greeted us with a warm smile and ushered us into a comfortable minibus. The 45-minute drive to Shimoni was a scenic journey, offering glimpses of the lush Kenyan landscape. As we arrived, the anticipation of the day ahead was palpable.

After a brief orientation, we made our way to the jetty, passing by local vendors selling sun hats and refreshments. I couldn’t resist picking up a hat, knowing the importance of sun protection during our day at sea. Boarding the smaller motorized tender required a bit of agility, but the crew was on hand to assist, ensuring everyone was safely aboard.

As we set off, the gentle rocking of the sea accompanied us, and soon, we were treated to the sight of playful dolphins dancing alongside our dhow. Sipping on tea and nibbling on pastries, we watched in awe as these magnificent creatures graced us with their presence. It was a magical start to our snorkeling adventure.

Exploring the Underwater World

The dhow anchored a short distance from the reef, and with fins and masks in hand, we plunged into the warm, inviting waters of Kisite Marine Park. The vibrant coral and diverse marine life were a feast for the eyes. Schools of colorful fish darted around us, and the occasional turtle glided by, adding to the enchantment of the underwater world.

The crew, ever attentive, accompanied us in the water, ensuring our safety and comfort. For those less confident in the water, life jackets were available, and the crew was always ready to lend a helping hand. The experience was exhilarating, and the time seemed to fly by as we explored the two different snorkeling sites.

After our underwater escapades, climbing back onto the dhow was made easy with the assistance of the crew. Their professionalism and cheerful demeanor made the experience all the more enjoyable. Even those in our group who chose not to snorkel found the journey delightful, soaking in the beauty of the marine park from the comfort of the boat.

A Taste of Swahili Hospitality

Our next stop was Wasini Island, where a traditional Swahili seafood lunch awaited us. The tender ride to the island was smooth, and despite the high tide, the crew ensured a safe and comfortable transfer. Wading ashore, we were greeted by the island’s rustic charm and the tantalizing aroma of freshly prepared seafood.

The dining area, though basic, was clean and offered a welcome respite from the sun. The meal was a culinary delight, with an array of seafood dishes that showcased the rich flavors of Swahili cuisine. For those with different preferences, chicken and vegetarian options were available, though our group unanimously opted for the seafood feast.

As we savored our meal, the attentive service and the serene setting made for a truly memorable experience. With soft drinks, beer, and wine flowing freely, I chose to end my meal with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake, enjoying the view of the sea from my seat.

The journey back to the jetty was a peaceful one, and as we boarded the minibus for our return to Diani Beach, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The Pilli Pipa Dhow snorkeling experience had been a perfect blend of excitement, relaxation, and cultural immersion, leaving us with cherished memories of our time in Kenya.
