Half day visit to Destrehan Plantation - What a gem. This plantation is close to New Orleans and has lots of history. Clint was our tour guide and did a great job explaining the history of the plantation and sharing his knowledge about life on the plantation. We spent several hours exploring the various outbuildings on our own. We were able to take a break and have a delicious light lunch in their cafe. This plantation is definitely worth the visit.

It was informative and a learning experience. - Not far from New Orleans is the Destrehan Plantation. It is worth the tour. Alan was our tour guide. He had lots of stories and information on the plantation. We learned so much about the slaves and women of the plantation. There are many building to explore. Alan also told us about the cemetery down the road. It was interesting to explore.

A very interesting and different plantation tour! - Destrehan was our 6th plantation tour, so I did not think we'd hear anything new. I was wrong! Alan, our guide, was super knowledgeable. The information was presented in a very interesting fashion. Learning about Charles was super cool. Seeing this house gave us a lot of great context for activity in the area over time (learning about Destrehan himself and his role locally, the 1811 slave revolt, etc.). Of the 6 plantation tours we did, this is in my top 2 favorites for sure!

A walk back in time - We had a very informative tour of the main house with Alan. It had been several years since we toured and we were amazed at the number of authentic items including portraits and documents that had been added. After the house tour Ann narrated our visit to the 1811 Slave Revolt museum on the grounds. Ann's stories and the local artwork added greatly to our experience. The structures and grounds are very well restored and maintained.

Highly recommend - I went with a friend that came from out of town. Both of us had such a great experience. Jim (with 1 M) was our tour guide he was a 10/10! I highly recommend. He knew so much and explained everything so patiently. He was super friendly and made the experience so pleasant. Once we walked into the museum we were greeted with a huge friendly smile by Ann (with no E) LOL! She explained a lot as well. They both answered with so such enthusiasm about the plantation and it's history. Over all highly recommend the tour. My friend and I learned so much during our time there. Yes! Definitely experience this!

If You Visit One Plantation, Make It This One - A group of four of us visited Destrehan Plantation today, and it was an exceptional experience from beginning to end—easily one of the best plantation tours we’ve done in Louisiana. Our tour was led by Jim (with one “M”), and he was truly outstanding. Jim is a published college professor who specializes in Southern plantations, and his depth of knowledge was immediately apparent. We were delayed by a few minutes at the start of the tour due to one member of our group needing to retrieve medication, and Jim handled the situation with complete professionalism and kindness. While we waited, he took the time to talk with us casually—not only about Destrehan Plantation, but also about Louisiana history more broadly. His explanation of why cemeteries in Louisiana are structured the way they are was fascinating and completely unexpected, and it set the tone for just how engaging and thoughtful the tour would be. The tour itself was extremely well-paced, informative, and enjoyable. We’ve visited several plantations, and what stood out most here was the ability to thoughtfully compare and contrast Destrehan with others in the region. The restoration and preservation work done on this property is nothing short of remarkable. You can clearly see evidence of how the plantation suffered over time, and just as clearly see the painstaking effort that went into restoring it with care, accuracy, and respect for its history. Inside the main house, the original documents from the Destrehan family and the artifacts on display add a powerful sense of authenticity. Walking through the rooms truly feels like stepping back in time. What makes the experience even better is the freedom to explore the surrounding grounds and outbuildings afterward. Being able to walk the property, take your time, and absorb the setting adds real depth to the visit. Overall, this was an outstanding experience. While I would encourage anyone interested in Louisiana history to visit multiple plantations for broader context, if someone were only going to visit one, this would absolutely be the one to choose. The quality of the tour, the depth of historical insight, and the condition of the property make Destrehan Plantation a must-see.
