Great Ride, But Beware of the SIM Card Scam - I booked an airport pickup for a smooth arrival in Bali, and overall, the service itself was excellent. Adi, the driver was on time, professional, and communicative. He helped us with our luggage, the car was clean and comfortable, and the entire ride felt seamless. One thing I appreciated was how he asked if we needed SIM cards and offered to take us to get one. At the time, this seemed like a thoughtful extra service—until I realized what was really happening. When we arrived at the shop for the SIM, I was told it was 500,000 IDR (about $30+ USD) for a SIM card. Now, having traveled quite a bit, I knew that seemed steep for Bali, but since I trusted the driver and had just landed, I went along with it. I purchased a 60GB data plan, thinking I’d be set for my trip. Fast forward one week later, and my data was completely gone, despite Bali offering free WiFi almost everywhere I went. Something didn’t add up. That’s when I started digging into local pricing and realized I had been overcharged nearly 5x the actual price. The average SIM card with a solid data plan should cost around 100,000 - 150,000 IDR ($7-10 USD), not 500,000 IDR. After talking to other travelers, I discovered this is a common scam targeting tourists. The taxi drivers and some SIM vendors work together, taking unsuspecting visitors straight to overpriced SIM shops where they charge ridiculously high rates. To make things worse, the "60GB" I paid for disappeared mysteriously fast, which raises questions about whether the data plan was even legitimate. Tips to Avoid This Scam: Buy Your SIM at the Airport – There are official counters in the airport (like Telkomsel, XL, and Indosat) where you can get a fair price. Know the Real Prices – A local SIM card with 20GB of data should cost around 100,000 - 150,000 IDR ($7-10 USD). Even a larger 50-60GB plan should be no more than 200,000-250,000 IDR. Use an eSIM Instead – If your phone supports eSIMs, consider buying an international data plan from providers like Airalo or Holafly before you arrive. Ask for a Price Breakdown – If a driver or vendor offers to "help" you get a SIM, ask upfront for the price and compare it online before agreeing. Be Wary of Random SIM Shops – If your driver is taking you to a shop outside the airport, you’re likely getting an inflated tourist price. Final Thoughts While my airport pickup experience was great overall, this SIM card situation left a bad taste in my mouth. I appreciate the driver's good service, but it’s clear that some drivers are taking advantage of tourists by partnering with overpriced vendors. It’s frustrating because this kind of scam hurts Bali’s tourism reputation, especially when visitors realize they’ve been overcharged by so much. If you’re visiting Bali, just be aware of this SIM card trap and plan ahead. Otherwise, you might end up spending way more than necessary for data you barely even use! Would I use this pickup service again? Yes, but I’d skip the SIM stop and buy it myself.

Over 2 hours late - We were very disappointed with the service. First I get a call late at night (because of time zone difference) the night beforehand wondering where we were - I replied we were not due till the next day. When we did arrive there was no-one waiting for us. Eventually they replied to our WhatsApp messaging and call claiming they were stuck in traffic. The then sent a message saying they were in the airport and where to meet. After standing outside for over half an hour we get sent a photo showing where they were, lucky the local taxi driver (whom we should have went with) knew where it was and showed us. So after 2 hours we finally get in the car and then the driver continually texted during the drive to our hotel. At least the drive itself was uneventful.
