Shark Snorkelling After a safety briefing on the beach with experienced guides who have spent countless hours familiarizing themselves with the local school of sharks, guests will board a boat with the guides and head to the reef shark site. The guides will accompany guests in the water at all times, closely observing the sharks’ behavior to ensure safety. The water depth at the snorkelling site ranges from 4 to 6 meters, and life jackets are available for those who are not confident swimmers.
Other Activities For the rest of the day, guests can enjoy lunch and take advantage of the snorkelling gear, kayaks, and paddle boards provided.

- Is it safe?
- Yes. You’ll be provided with safety instruction from our experienced guides who’ve spent hundreds of hours getting to know our resident school of sharks. Our guides will be in the water with you the entire time and will closely monitor the sharks behaviour to ensure your safety.
- What type of sharks will I see?
- There are two main species of sharks encountered, White Tip Reef Sharks and Black Tip Reef Sharks, both are common in the tropical warm waters of the South Pacific. Each species can grow to a length of just over 1.5 metres although under the water they appear 25% larger, a snorkeling face mask optical illusion. White Tips are the dominant species and are by nature an inquisitive shark not frightened to check you out. Their Black Tip relatives are by contrast timid and will shy away if they feel threatened.
- How many sharks will I see?
- Numbers vary but it is common to see up to six sharks.
- How deep is the water?
- Both Black Tip and White Tip Reef Sharks prefer shallower waters making snorkeling easy with good visibility. It’s even possible to see the sharks from our boat before entering the water. Water depth varies between 4 - 6 metres depending on the tide.
- What if I’m not a good swimmer, haven’t snorkeled before or don’t want to snorkel but my travelling companion does?
- Buoyancy aids are available for less confident swimmers and because these sharks prefer shallow waters there’s no necessity to dive under the water to secure a thrilling view. Non-snorkelers can join the day but sit out the snorkeling experience.
- Our Shark Guarantee
- As Sharks are wild animals we cannot guarantee sightings however we have a 95% +success rate of sighting sharks. In the event that you don’t see any sharks we are happy for you to return for a complimentary “Ultimate Encounter - Snorkel with Sharks” within 3 days of your original cruise.
- If poor weather and sea conditions result in the cancellation of the ‘Snorkeling with Sharks experience,’ a substitute snorkeling safari will be provided.
- Please bring swimsuit, towel, protective clothing from the sun including a hat and sunblock, light jacket or sweater during the cooler months, money or credit card for optional purchases, your camera and sense of fun!

As an avid ocean lover I... - As an avid ocean lover I loved this experience. Greated by locals signing the Island was beautiful and although I was skeptical from previous reviews about the amount of time in the water with the sharks it was a fair amount of time for a scheldued day trip. We had free time after our shark dive / lunch and was able to utalise this to snorkel off the beach and enjoy the ocean even more (although no sharks in that close unfortunetly!).

SHARKS AWESOME , do be afraid - this was so much fun and an experience I will never forget. the guides are really cool/ knowledgable people who made the day awesome. We got the video package which I highly recommend they are crazy awesome videos to have. Food was incredible, the people on the island where awesome to meet they where so kind to everyone and just made the day even better. Be prepared for a long day, especially if your resort is a bit further out from port Denarau.

Swimming with sharks - Was amazing to get to swim with them so close and oli got some great footage of them swimming around me! Food afterwards was also just what was needed 👏🏼

Wow!!! - This tour was so much more than I expected! The main boat ride from denarau was about an hour and a half and then you get on smaller boats to get to a small resort island. This was such a cool experience. Once we arrived at the island the staff greets you with a song, which I love. The snorkeling was incredible. The water was so clear and the corals and fish were so colorful and plentiful! We saw 3-4 sharks which was so cool, but the real showstopper was just the reef itself.
After snorkeling, the buffet lunch was delicious. Such a variety of food and everything was delicious.
Would highly recommend this tour!

Ultimate Snorkel with Reef Sharks in Fiji - South Sea Cruises; I booked the Ultimate Encounters Snorkel with Reef Sharks, including a buffet Lunch at Barefoot Kuata Island.
I booked the day before, for my last day of my holiday, and wow what an experience. A full day trip from Port Denarau and return was relaxing, I dozed off both ways. Arrived at Kuata island, we transferred onto small shuttle boats off the cruiser.
Had our safety briefing and got kitted up with Life jackets and flippers. I took my own Snorkel and goggles. Then onto a boat ride for about 15 mins, that took us up to the reef.
Dived into the lovely warm waters, straight away there were 3 reef sharks swimming around, it was amazing to encounter. They provided a photographer to capture my underwater experience. I also purchased an underwater cover for my iPhone to capture my adventure.
After about 30 mins our encounter was over, and were called back into the boats. I didn’t want to leave. Once we got back to the resort, we had 3-4 hours to pick up, there was a lovely buffet lunch waiting for us. Then a dip in the pool to cool off and relax, or go snorkelling some more at the reef on the beach. Other activities available, Kayaks and paddle boards were provided.
Received all the beautiful photos via wi fi straight away.
I leave with some wonderful memories of my snorkelling & swimming with reef sharks.

Do it! - This was a really neat trip. You start by taking a ferry out to Kuata Island. From there, the reef is a short boat ride away. The reef is really amazing. We saw lots of black and white tip reef sharks (who do not care about people at all), octopus, squid, lots of fish, and beautiful pristine coral. After about an hour, they take you back to a resort on the island for lunch and to enjoy the island. Later on the ferry comes back by and picks you up. We have snorkeled lots of places, and this reef was really excellent.

Aqua blue water with sharkies. - The guides were very friendly and the diving was beautiful! Lots of sharks. Tha water was really clear and lots of coral. Good food too.

Fantastic encounter with sharks - Overall, it was well worth getting through the logistics, as well as a surprisingly long walk to/from meet up place to boat location (four times), to have a fantastic encounter with the sharks, beautiful reef, and a good variety of fish. More communication describing specifically how the trip was going to be organized (ie, boat loading, access to gear, etc) would have helped a lot. Still, the experience is highly recommended. If it's possible, an extra 10-15 minutes more for viewing sharks would have been great. The buffet lunch was delicious. Good variety of food and many vegetarian options. Thank you for an overall great day!
