Your guide will provide detailed insights.
- Old Church - Following the Markt square, proceed to the Old Church. This historic site is the final resting place of Johannes Vermeer, among other notable Dutch figures. Visitors will have the opportunity to enter the church and visit Vermeer’s grave.
- Museum Prinsenhof Delft - A visit to Delft is incomplete without seeing the Prinsenhof, the site where the Father of the Fatherland was assassinated. Although this event occurred nearly 50 years before Vermeer’s birth, it significantly influenced the city’s history.
- Gemeenlandshuis van Delfland - As the tour heads south of Delft, towards the location of ‘The View of Delft,’ you will pass by the impressive 1500s facade of the water board. Your guide will share its fascinating history.
- VOC-Kamer Delft - Near the southern end of the city, you will encounter a building of the Dutch East India Company, specifically its Delft chamber. The company played a crucial role in providing exotic materials and pigments, indirectly supporting Vermeer’s career.
- Armamentarium - Opposite the Dutch East India Company building is a former state of Holland weapons arsenal. An earlier version of this structure is visible in Vermeer’s View of Delft.
- Hooikade - From this vantage point, you can view Delft from the same perspective Vermeer used when sketching his renowned city painting. Discover what remains recognizable today.
- Maria van Jessekerk - As the tour returns north, you will see the Maria van Jessekerk, a Catholic church. During Vermeer’s era, this area was where Catholics resided and held clandestine services. It is also where Vermeer lived with his mother-in-law and created his paintings. Recent 2023 information suggests the house may still stand. Let’s see if the curtains are finally open.
- Vlamingstraat - Before visiting the Vermeer Museum, stop by Vlamingstraat. It is now believed that number 42 on this street is depicted in Vermeer’s painting of a little street in Delft. Observe its current appearance.
- Vermeer Centrum Delft - Conclude your tour at the Vermeer Centrum, a museum dedicated to Vermeer’s life and work, located in the former artists’ guild of Delft. Vermeer frequently visited this place and even served as the president of the painters’ guild.
