Eighty-five percent of the Nile’s water originates in Ethiopia, flowing from Lake Tana. After 200 km on the highlands, the road dramatically descends into the Blue Nile Gorge, 1,000 meters below, offering the most spectacular scenery in the region. It’s truly remarkable how the mighty Nile carves through the rock, creating a magnificent landscape. The gorge, with a depth of 1 km, is comparable in scale to America’s Grand Canyon.
The next stop on the tour is the Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in the 13th century by Abune Tekle Haymanot. Overlooking the Jema River Gorge, a tributary of the Blue Nile, the monastery houses ecclesiastical, cultural, and historical treasures. Visitors may also spot birds and baboons.
Below the monastery is the Portuguese Bridge, also known as the Egg Bridge. Nearby, visitors can have a close encounter with a group of Gelada baboons.
