- Dambadeniya Ancient Kingdom Museum - The Dambadeniya kingdom flourished in the mid-13th century, particularly under the reign of King Parakramabahu II, a peaceful ruler who elevated Sinhalese literature with his epic poems ‘Kavisilumina’ and ‘Visuddi Marga Sannasa’. Visitors can explore the recently unearthed remains of the old Temple of the Tooth, which once housed the Tooth Relic, as well as the ruins of the royal palace complex, complete with gardens, walls, and moats.
- Yapahuwa Rock Fortress - In the 13th century, Yapahuwa served as a royal residence, preserving intriguing remnants. While many ancient defenses are still visible, the ornamental stairway stands out as the main attraction.
Situated in Kurunegala, within Sri Lanka’s North Western Province, the Yapahuwa ancient fortress rises 90 meters above the surrounding plains. Constructed by King Buwanekabahu the First as Sri Lanka’s capital in 1301, the Royal residence, Temple of the Tooth Relic, and battle defenses now lie in ruins.
The ruined walls of Yapahuwa form a rough semicircle, with the ends meeting the base of a steep, rocky granite outcrop. The outer fortification, an earthen rampart extending about a mile, stands approximately 20 feet high. Atop the rampart are the remnants of a brick wall that once protected the interior. A moat encircles the rampart.
- Panduwasnuwara Kingdom - The journey to Panduwasnuwara, your final destination, takes about an hour and a half. This ancient city was among Sri Lanka’s earliest kingdoms, serving as the capital in the 5th century BC. It was also utilized in the 12th century, resulting in a blend of ruins from different eras. Spanning nearly 12 hectares, the site features notable attractions such as the recently restored two-story former Temple of the Tooth, the ruins of the royal palace, and the artificial reservoir Panda Wewa, one of the earliest man-made irrigation systems. Visitors will also explore the Panduwasnuwara museum, showcasing numerous archaeological discoveries from local excavations. The visit to Panduwasnuwara lasts an hour and a half.
