A Journey Through Time and Culture

As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, my adventures often take me to the heart of Africa’s untamed wilderness. However, my recent journey to Debre Libanos was a departure from the usual safari trails. It was a day filled with cultural immersion, breathtaking landscapes, and a deep dive into Ethiopia’s rich history.

The day began with a scenic drive from Addis Ababa, where the landscape gradually transformed from urban sprawl to rolling hills and lush greenery. Our guide, Muluken, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories of the land and its people. As we drove, I couldn’t resist playing some of my favorite road trip tunes, adding a personal soundtrack to the unfolding scenery.

Our first stop was the Debre Libanos Monastery, a place steeped in history and spirituality. The stained glass windows by Afewerk Tekle were a sight to behold, casting colorful reflections that danced across the ancient stone walls. The passionate monk who guided us through the monastery shared tales of faith and devotion, bringing the history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to life. Standing at the entrance, I was struck by the throngs of pilgrims, their weathered faces and prayer sticks telling stories of their own. The scent of incense mingled with the crisp mountain air, creating an atmosphere of reverence and peace.

Nature’s Masterpiece: Jemma River Gorge

After the spiritual journey at the monastery, we ventured to the Jemma River Gorge. The views were nothing short of spectacular, with the gorge stretching out like a vast canvas painted by nature itself. As a photographer, I was in my element, capturing the interplay of light and shadow across the rugged landscape.

Muluken knew all the best spots for photography, and I was grateful for his expertise. We even spotted a troop of Gelada Baboons, their unique social behavior providing a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these endemic creatures. It’s moments like these that remind me why I fell in love with Africa in the first place – the raw beauty and the intricate dance of life that unfolds in every corner of this continent.

The Portuguese Bridge, a relic from the 16th century, was another highlight. Its arches framed the gorge below, offering a perfect vantage point to soak in the surrounding beauty. As I stood there, I couldn’t help but reflect on the passage of time and the stories these stones could tell.

A Taste of Ethiopian Hospitality

No journey in Ethiopia would be complete without experiencing its renowned hospitality. We were welcomed into a traditional Oromo home for an intimate coffee ceremony. The rich aroma of freshly roasted beans filled the air, and as we sipped the strong, flavorful brew, we engaged in conversation with our hosts, learning about their way of life and traditions.

This cultural exchange was a reminder of the importance of sustainable travel – respecting and preserving the cultures and environments we visit. It’s a philosophy I hold dear, and one that guides my adventures across Africa.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the myriad experiences that had filled our journey. From the spiritual to the natural, the historical to the cultural, Debre Libanos offered a tapestry of memories that will stay with me for years to come.
