• Place de Morny - Welcome to Place Morny, the heart of Deauville. Picture the scene in 1859: only dunes and marshes existed. Architect Breney envisioned a brand-new city, designing wide avenues connecting key locations of the future resort: the station for Paris travelers, the beach and sea, the racetrack with its horses, the town hall, and the casino.
• Mairie de Deauville - In front of you is the Deauville City Hall. It’s hard to believe that before this building, the town hall was located atop Mont Canisy, near the Saint-Laurent church, until a fire destroyed it in 1840.
• Hotel Barrière Le Normandy Deauville - You are standing before one of Deauville’s icons: the Normandy Hotel. Imagine the summer of 1912, when this palace first opened. With its H-shaped design, half-timbered façades, and dormer roofs, it resembles a Norman tale, both mansion and film set. At its center, the “Norman courtyard,” planted with apple trees, is a hidden garden.
• Casino Barrière Deauville - Here is another great symbol of Deauville: its Casino. Have you noticed that in France, casinos are only found in spas or seaside resorts? This is due to a 19th-century law still in effect today. That’s why you find the Casino de Deauville, open since 1864, while there are none in Paris!
• Deauville City - Pause for a moment to observe this large building on your left, the International Centre of Deauville. It intrigues, as only half is visible, as if it melted into the sand. This was intentional: when built in the late 80s, the aim was to preserve the waterfront view. Over 150,000 cubic meters of sand were moved, a massive construction project, and it was inaugurated in 1992 by Clint Eastwood, who presented “Ruthless.” A fitting symbol, as this place quickly became Deauville’s “cinema palace.”
• Deauville Beach - You are on Deauville’s most famous promenade: the renowned Planks. Before their creation, only old wooden cabins lined the sand. But in the early 1920s, the city wanted a setting worthy of the station’s reputation. In 1923, it inaugurated its “Bainspompéiens,” an Art Deco, concrete, and mosaic bathing establishment with 250 cabins, lounges, and even an American bar.
• Royal Barriere Hotel - This is the Royal Hotel, one of Deauville’s two legendary palaces. Inaugurated in July 1913, it was completed in record time, just ten months after construction began. Designed by Théo Petit, already the architect of Normandy, with Georges Wybo’s participation, the future contributor to the Casino.
• Deauville City - You are on Raspail Street, in the Villas district. Look around: wood-framed facades, checkerboard bricks, cut roofs, small gardens enclosed by light grids… Everything here exudes vacation.
• Les Franciscaines - You are in front of a unique building: the Franciscans. With such a name, it’s easy to imagine that before housing a state-of-the-art museum and cultural center, it was a convent! Built in 1876, it welcomed the first Franciscan sisters a few years later.
• Eglise Saint Augustin - Here stands the church of Saint Augustine. It was built to replace the old parish of Saint-Laurent, perched on the hill and considered too remote for a thriving seaside resort. Here, in the heart of Deauville, a place of worship was needed to match the new city’s stature.
• Hippodrome Deauville La Touques - You are close to a place that shaped Deauville’s identity: its racetrack. Travel back to August 1864. Here, only dry marshes existed, yet it was already a day of celebration: on August 14 and 15, the first major races of the emerging resort were held.
• Appartement La Marina Deauville - You are in front of the Morny basin, at the heart of Deauville’s marina. Even in the 19th century, this basin welcomed the sailing boats of the first vacationers who traveled by train from Paris to enjoy the sea.
• Deauville City - Pause here for a moment, on Place Gabrielle-Chanel. It was in Deauville that it all began for the designer, long before Paris or global fame. In 1913, Gabrielle Chanel, already nicknamed “Coco,” opened her very first shop under her full name.
• Pont des Belges - On your right, the Pont des Belges. It connects Deauville to Trouville, but its name especially recalls a significant episode in the Liberation in August 1944. Belgian and Luxembourg soldiers of the Piron Brigade crossed the Touques here, under German fire, after the bridge had been destroyed.
• Place du Marché - Pause for a moment in the Market Square to admire its architecture and discuss Norman gastronomy. In 1923, architect Georges Madeline built two half-timbered halls there, topped with tiles and inspired by the Norman style. With their traditional house-like appearance, they give Deauville’s heart a picturesque charm, like an outdoor Covered Market.
• Gare de Trouville - In front of you flows the Touques, the small river separating Deauville from its neighbor Trouville. On this side, the elegant resort born from scratch in the Second Empire, with its palaces, villas, and casino. On the other, the elder: Trouville, much older, and already famous in the 19th century as a fishing port and “Queen of the beaches.”
• Deauville - In front of you, notice these two towers striped black and white. They were recently built to mark the entrance to the port peninsula. One houses the captaincy, the other serves as a lookout. If you like, you can climb to the top: 155 steps, or an elevator, and a 360° view of Deauville, Trouville, the sea, and even the Augeronne countryside.
• Deauville City - You are admiring Cryptogram One, a work donated to the city in 2012 by artist Karl Lagasse. As a child of Deauville, he was named one of the ten most talented sculptors under thirty in 2009. Observe the letters engraved on all its sides: they form universal words, such as Hope, Wisdom, or 7th Art.
• Morny’s Deauville - Before you stands the statue of the Duke of Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III, and an ambitious and visionary businessman. Since the square bears his name and you may not know him, let’s introduce one of Deauville’s founders.
