Borax - While the famous Gold Rush attracted many to Death Valley, it wasn’t gold that maintained the valley’s significance. In their eager quest for the precious metal, miners discovered something equally valuable: borax.
-
Dante’s View - Offering stunning views of the rolling salt flats below, Dante’s View is a fantastic spot for photography or simply watching the sunset behind the Panamint Mountains. This viewpoint rises over 5,000 feet above the Badwater Basin, at the edge of the Black Mountain Range.
-
Twenty Mule Team Canyon - Welcome to Twenty Mule Team Canyon, named after the iconic wagon trains mentioned earlier. This winding road provides excellent desert scenery as you navigate between saffron-colored hills and vibrant badlands. Visiting in the early morning or around sunset will reward you with spectacular colors as the orange sunlight illuminates the dramatic rock faces.
-
Zabriskie Point - Named after a 19th-century borax magnate, whom you’ll learn about shortly, Zabriskie Point is undoubtedly one of Death Valley’s most iconic spots. From this vantage point on the Amargosa Mountain range, you can truly appreciate how erosion has sculpted this valley. Directly below are the badlands, and beyond them, much lighter in color, are the stunning salt flats, all framed by the towering Panamint Mountains.
-
Furnace Creek Visitor Center - At the Furnace Creek Visitor Center, you’ll find snacks, water, and restrooms, but most importantly, a thermometer! Just outside the entrance is a large digital display showing the exact temperature at one of Death Valley’s lowest points. Be sure to take a photo next to it to amaze your friends and family back home.
-
Golden Canyon - From this point, you can access the Golden Canyon trail. This out-and-back trail is about 3 miles in total and takes around an hour to complete. This popular trail attracts many visitors each year, so you’re likely to meet a few fellow hikers during your visit!
-
Mars Hill - The gentle hill to your right is known as Mars Hill. The name is fitting! Much of Death Valley resembles the barren, lifeless surface of Mars. The deep ochre stones, unusual rock formations, and vast dusty expanses certainly feel otherworldly.
-
Artist’s Drive - This landscape was crafted by volcanic deposits of iron oxides and chlorite. While the badlands of Zabriskie Point were colored mainly by different sedimentary deposits, these rocks owe their vibrant hues to a completely different era in Death Valley’s geological history.
-
Artists Palette - This is the prime location to view the Artist’s Palette, a collection of vividly colorful rocks that seem almost unreal. Yet, they are entirely natural!
-
Devil’s Golf Course - This road is rugged and unpaved, so exercise caution when driving. It leads to a captivating landscape known as Devil’s Golf Course. When most people think of golf courses, they envision lush rolling hills, well-manicured greens, and the sound of birds chirping. However, Death Valley offers a stark contrast.
-
Badwater Basin - Welcome to Badwater Basin, home to salt flats that stretch across the desert for an impressive 200 square miles. At 282 feet below sea level, this basin is the lowest point in North America.
