• Baodingshan - Dazu is a county within the Chongqing municipality. The Dazu rock carvings encompass a total of 50,000 rock sculptures and 100,000 inscriptions throughout Dazu County, distributed across 75 different sites. Baoding is the most renowned among them. The construction of the Dazu rock carvings spans from the early Tang Dynasty (7th century) to the end of the Qing Dynasty (late 19th century), with its peak during the Song Dynasty (10th to 13th century). The Dazu rock carvings are among the four most famous Buddhist rock carvings in China.

Baoding rock carvings boast a history of over 800 years. The features of Baoding rock carvings related to Buddhism include:

1. It is the only tantric Buddhist rock carving in the Han Chinese inhabited area.
2. It is the only Buddhist preaching carving in China, rather than a praying carving. Local lay Buddhist Mr. Zhao Zhi Feng dedicated his entire life—70 years—to designing, fundraising, and organizing it. It is an integrated Buddhist scripture.
3. It illustrates the fusion of Buddhism with Confucianism.

The sculpture of the Thousand-Hand Goddess of Mercy is an amazing artwork with 1,007 arms in various gestures. The reclining Buddha is another treasure. Even if one does not have extensive knowledge of Buddhism, the Baoding carvings are a treasure trove of art. Almost all sculptures are original.
