The Dazu rock carvings are the best-preserved among all Chinese grottoes, with most caves and statues remaining largely undamaged. Located in Dazu District, Chongqing, these carvings are a collection of Chinese religious sculptures dating back to the 7th century. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, they are celebrated for their outstanding artistic quality, vast number, and diverse subject matter. The sculptures illustrate Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist beliefs and are distributed across 75 protected sites in the area. The most renowned of these carvings is the Baodingshan.
There are over 50,000 Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian rock carvings and 100,000 characters of inscriptions scattered throughout Dazu.
