The first stop is the Yungang Grottoes, the city’s most impressive site and one of China’s largest grotto complexes. This relic from the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) features 53 grottoes and 51,000 statues. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, the Yungang Grottoes showcase the remarkable achievements of ancient Chinese Buddhist sculptural art.
- Hengshan Hanging Temple (Xuankong si) - After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, the tour continues to the unique wood-structured Hanging Monastery, perched on a cliff at the base of Hengshan Mountain. Constructed in 491, the Hanging Monastery boasts a history of over 1,400 years. From below, it resembles a precarious castle in the sky, offering a stunning view of Chinese architecture.
