Arrival and First Impressions

As the plane descended into Dar es Salaam, I felt the familiar thrill of anticipation that accompanies every African adventure. This time, my destination was the renowned Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve. Covering a staggering 54,600 square kilometers, it is Tanzania’s largest wildlife reserve and a sanctuary for a diverse array of species. My heart raced with the promise of witnessing the majestic elephant populations and the myriad of other wildlife that call this vast expanse home.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by William, our guide for the journey. His reputation preceded him, and I was eager to see if he lived up to the glowing reviews. As we embarked on the five-and-a-half-hour drive from Dar es Salaam to the park, William’s expertise became immediately apparent. He pointed out various bird species and shared fascinating insights into the local ecology, setting the stage for the adventure that lay ahead.

The Heart of the Safari
