After being donated by Englishman Sam Popham to the Institute of Fundamental Studies, it was further developed to encompass 27 acres of vegetation. The palace is situated centrally on the island between Dambulla and Habarane on a vast rocky plateau 370 meters above sea level. Sigiriya rock plateau, formed from the magma of an extinct volcano, rises 200 meters above the surrounding jungles. Visitors are amazed by the unique blend of nature and human creativity. The fortress complex includes remnants of a ruined palace, surrounded by a vast network of fortifications, gardens, ponds, canals, alleys, and fountains.

Visit Duration

The complete visit to Sigiriya rock takes about 2 hours, including the gardens and water canals. It takes approximately 40 minutes to climb to the top, 1 hour at the summit, and 20 minutes to descend.

Visit these shops to marvel at the stunning gemstones, cut and polished from rough stones to dazzling gems. Discover the Royal blue sapphire that propelled Sri Lanka’s gem industry after being presented to the Queen of England in 1981, eventually becoming part of the engagement ring Prince Charles used to propose to Lady Diana Spencer.

Popular gems in Sri Lanka and Kandy include Sapphires, Star Sapphires, Cat’s Eyes, Rubies, Star Rubies, Alexandrite, and many other semi-precious stones. Besides blue sapphires, pink and yellow sapphires are also favored.

Kandy View Point - Climb the hill by Kandy Lake to reach Kandy viewpoint for an unbeatable city view. As a popular tourist spot, it attracts many peddlers, though they often sell sub-par items. The area is also known for pickpocketing, so keep an eye on your belongings. From the hill, enjoy stunning views over the lake and the city.

Kandy’s pride, the Temple of the Tooth – Sri Dalada Maligawa, is the city’s most sacred attraction. It houses the tooth relic of Lord Buddha in a golden chest. The relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD and kept in various temples before being housed here. Built in the 1600s, it underwent renovations until the British took over in 1815.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, located 5.5 km west of Kandy in Sri Lanka’s Central Province, attracts 2 million visitors annually. It is near the Mahaweli River and is famous for its orchid collection.

Ramboda Waterfall - Entrance Fee: 50 LKR ($0.17)

Ramboda Ella Falls, a breathtaking 358-foot waterfall, ranks as the 11th highest in the country and 729th globally. Located in the Pussellawa region near the Ramboda Bridge after the Ramboda Tunnel, it offers stunning views from various points. A pathway leads to a lookout point with a spectacular view of the waterfall’s most impressive section. The walk can be challenging over rocks and steep slopes but is worth the effort.

Seetha Amman Kovil - Dedicated to Sitadevi, Lord Rama’s wife, the Sita Amman Temple is nestled in Nuwara Eliya’s hills. Revered by Hindus, it is the only temple of its kind worldwide. Located 5 kilometers from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy, it holds significance as the site where Sitadevi was imprisoned by King Ravana 5000 years ago.

Devotees visit the area where Sita bathed, sat, and prayed. Many believe this part of the Ramayana epic occurred here, making it a popular tourist spot. Pooja timings are from 8 am – 1 pm and 2 pm – 6:30 pm.

Nuwara Eliya to Ella (Overnight stay in Ella)

Nine Arches Bridge - Spanning 91 meters and 24 meters high, the architectural marvel of Nine Arches Bridge stretches on the Demodara loop. The nine arches create a picturesque setting surrounded by dense jungle and tea plantations.

Also known as the Bridge in the Sky, standing below the bridge allows you to see the sky through the arches. Nearly a century old, it was built in 1921 amidst the Hill country’s lush foliage and stands as a testament to railway construction during the British colonial era. Due to a steel shortage during World War II, the bridge was constructed using only cement and stone bricks.

Little Adam’s Peak View Point - Named for its resemblance to the sacred Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), where Sinhalese Buddhist tradition holds the sacred footprint of Lord Buddha.

Little Adam’s Peak, or Mini Adam’s Peak, is a popular hiking destination near Ella. The 1,141-meter peak offers a less strenuous hike than Ella Rock, taking about 45 minutes through scenic tea plantations. The summit provides breathtaking 360-degree views of the misty mountains, best visited at dawn or dusk.

Located approximately 4 km from Ella Town, it is one of the easiest hikes in the area. The trail begins from Ella Town towards Passara Road, just past Flower Garden Resort.

Ella to Kithulgala I Mirissa (Overnight stay in Mirissa)

The best time for white water rafting at Kitulgala is between May and December, as the rainy season can make the water extremely rough and unsafe.

Independence Square - Independence Square is a top spot for relaxation in Colombo, located in the upscale Cinnamon Gardens district. It serves as a monument, park, and walking area, featuring a memorial hall, museum, vast lawn, and arcade. Constructed in 1948 to commemorate independence from British rule, the Memorial Hall is an open-sided structure with beautifully carved cement columns and a tiled roof. Statues of seated lions surround the hall, used for ceremonial functions. The hall resembles the Magul Maduwa of the last Kandyan Kingdom. Inside is the Memorial Museum, showcasing stone busts of those who fought for independence.

Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre - The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre is a venue for large-scale theatrical productions. Initiated by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, it honors the country’s theatrical history by offering state support to performers. Designed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design and executed by local architects, the structure is inspired by the Lotus Pond in Polonnaruwa. Built by China, the project was funded by the Chinese Government as a grant, covering approximately 14,000 square meters.

The Colombo Lotus Tower, standing 350 meters (1150 feet) tall, dominates Colombo’s skyline. Construction began in 2012, making it the tallest self-supported structure in South Asia and the world’s 19th tallest tower, 24 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. It serves communication, leisure, and observation purposes. The design, inspired by the lotus flower, symbolizes purity in Sri Lankan culture. The Chinese EXIM bank funded its construction.

Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple - Founded by scholar monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala in the late 19th century, Gangaramaya is one of Colombo’s oldest temples. It is a place of learning and a cultural center, located near Beira Lake. The temple’s architecture reflects Sri Lankan, Chinese, Thai, and Indian influences. Gangaramaya is Colombo’s most visited temple and hosts the largest Vesak Festival annually. Seema Malaka Meditation Center, run by Gangaramaya Temple, was designed by renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa after the original structure sank. Bawa created three floating platforms connected by pontoon walkways, anchored to the shore with stone pillars.

Pettah - Pettah is one of Colombo’s oldest districts, known for its bustling, multi-ethnic atmosphere. The Pettah market, stretching from Olcott Mawatha to the main street, offers a wide range of goods. It’s common to see three-wheelers racing, vendors pushing carts, and people hurrying along. Vendors sell fruits, vegetables, meat, clothing, electronics, and jewelry. The Pettah Bazaar is ideal for finding interesting items at affordable prices. The market lies outside Colombo Fort’s remains, offering a variety of goods.
