The palace is situated in the heart of the island between Dambulla and Habarane on a massive rocky plateau 370 meters above sea level. Sigiriya rock plateau, formed from the magma of an extinct volcano, rises 200 meters above the surrounding jungles. Visitors are amazed by the unique harmony between nature and human creativity. The fortress complex includes remnants of a ruined palace, surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast gardens, ponds, canals, alleys, and fountains.
How long is the visit?
The entire visit to Sigiriya rock takes about 2 hours, including visits to the gardens and water canals. It takes approximately 40 minutes to climb to the top, 1 hour at the top, and 20 minutes to descend.

Natural Gems and Gemmological Museum - Sri Lanka, known as the Isle of Gems, offers a wide variety of gems and jewelry in Kandy’s retail shops. Visit these shops to marvel at the collection of beautiful gemstones, cut and polished from rough stones to dazzling gems. See the Royal blue sapphire that paved the way for Sri Lanka’s gem industry, after being presented to the Queen of England in 1981. This stone became part of the engagement ring Prince Charles used to propose to Lady Diana Spencer.
Popular gems found in Sri Lanka and Kandy include Sapphires, Star Sapphires, Cat’s Eyes, Rubies, Star Rubies, Alexandrite, and many other semi-precious stones. Besides blue sapphires, pink and yellow sapphires are also popular.
Kandy View Point - Climb the hill by Kandy Lake to reach Kandy viewpoint and enjoy an unbeatable view of the city. As a popular tourist spot, the area attracts many peddlers, though they often sell sub-par items. The area is also known for high pickpocket activity, so keep an eye on your belongings. From the hill, you can enjoy great views over the lake and the city as a whole.

Kandy’s pride and prestige, the Temple of the Tooth – Sri Dalada Maligawa, is the city’s most sacred and vital attraction. Its significance is tied to the legacy of the tooth relic of Lord Buddha, encased in a golden chest. The Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD and was kept in various temples across the island before being housed at this Temple of the Tooth. Built in the 1600s, it has undergone renovations, additions, and enhancements until the Kingdom of Kandy fell to the British in 1815.
Opening times – 5:30 am – 8:00 pm
The dress code should be modest, with shoulders and knees covered. Footwear must be removed.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, are about 5.5 km west of Kandy in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. It attracts 2 million visitors annually and is near the Mahaweli River. It is renowned for its collection of orchids.
Ramboda Waterfall - Entrance Fee:
50 LKR ($0.17)
Ramboda Ella Falls is a stunning waterfall, 358 feet high – the 11th highest in the country, and 729th in the world. It is located in the Pussellawa region, just by the Ramboda Bridge after the Ramboda Tunnel when traveling from Peradeniya, Kandy.
From the A5 highway above the bridge, you can get a great view of the middle section of the falls. From the main road, closer to the tunnel entrance, you can get a side view of the bottom section. Just before the Ramboda bridge, a pathway leads to a lookout point offering a spectacular view of the most impressive part of the waterfall. This walk can be tedious over rocks and steep slopes but is well worth the climb. To get a better view of the lower section, a short walk leads to the bottom of the waterfall, known as the ‘Ramboda Basin’.
Seetha Amman Kovil - Dedicated to Sitadevi, the wife of Lord Rama, the Sita Amman Temple sits in the hills of Nuwara Eliya. Revered by Hindus, it is considered the only such temple in the world. It is located 5 kilometers en route from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy. This temple is significant due to the story behind its origin – it was where Sitadevi was imprisoned by King Ravana for refusing to stay in his palace approximately 5000 years ago.
Devotees flock to this area where Sita bathed, the rock she sat on, and where she spent her time in prayer. Many believe this phase of the epic tale of Ramayana took place here, making it a popular tourist location. The temple’s pooja timings are from 8 am – 1 pm in the mornings and 2 pm – 6:30 pm in the afternoons.
Nuwara Eliya to Ella (Overnight stay in Ella)
Nine Arches Bridge - Spanning 91 meters and 24 meters high, the architectural brilliance of Nine Arches Bridge stretches on the Demodara loop. The stunning nine arches create a picturesque setting surrounded by thick jungle and tea plantations.
Also known as the Bridge in the Sky, when standing below the bridge and looking up, you can see the sky through the nine arches. Almost a century old, it was constructed in 1921 amidst the picturesque foliage of the Hill country and stands as a specimen of railway construction during the British colonial era. Due to a shortage of steel during World War II, the bridge was built solely using cement and stone bricks.
Little Adam’s Peak View Point - Named for its striking similarity to the sacred mountain Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), where, according to Sinhalese Buddhist tradition, lies the preserved and sacred footprint of Lord Buddha, instilled during one of his visits to Sri Lanka.
Little Adam’s Peak, also known as Mini Adam’s Peak, is another popular hiking destination in Ella. The 1,141-meter peak is a relatively easy hike compared to Ella Rock. The hike takes you through scenic tea plantations, taking only about 45 minutes to complete. The summit of Little Adam’s Peak offers incredible 360-degree views of the misty mountains and is best visited at dawn or dusk.
It is approximately 4 km from Ella Town and is considered one of the easiest hikes in the area. Beginning from Ella Town, towards Passara Road lies the foot of the rock, just past Flower Garden Resort.

Boat trips for whale watching in Mirissa during this season offer great chances of spotting Blue Whales just off Dondra Point, along the migration path from Africa to Australia.

A minor watercourse originating near Uragasmanhandiya in the Galle District of Sri Lanka, it widens into the Madu Ganga Lake at Balapitiya. The river then flows for a further 4.4 km before draining into the Indian Ocean.

Independence Square - Independence Square is one of the best places to relax in Colombo. Located in the affluent Cinnamon Gardens district, it serves as a monument, park, and walking area. There is a memorial hall, museum, vast green lawn, and the Arcade. The Independence Memorial Hall was constructed in 1948 to commemorate independence from British rule. The Memorial Hall is an open-sided hall with beautifully carved cement columns and a shapely tiled roof. Statues of seated lions surround this hall, used for ceremonial functions. The structure resembles the Magul Maduwa of the last Kandyan Kingdom. Inside the Memorial Hall is the Memorial Museum, featuring stone busts of those who fought for independence.
Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre - The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre is a performance center for large-scale theatrical productions. The concept was created by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa to honor the country’s theatrical history by offering state patronage to performers. Designed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, the project was executed under local architects’ supervision. The structural design was inspired by the Lotus Pond in Polonnaruwa. Construction was carried out by China, with funding provided by the Chinese Government as a grant. The building covers approximately 14,000 square meters of floor area.

The Colombo Lotus Tower, at 350 meters (1150 feet), dominates Colombo’s skyline. Construction began in 2012, making it the ‘tallest self-supported structure in South Asia’. It will also become the world’s 19th tallest tower, standing 24 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The tower will be used for communications, leisure, and observation purposes. As the name suggests, the design is influenced by the lotus flower, symbolizing purity in Sri Lankan culture. The construction is funded by the Chinese EXIM bank.
Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple - Started by the renowned scholar monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala in the late 19th century, Gangaramaya is one of the oldest temples in Colombo. It is not just a temple; it is a place of learning and a cultural center. Situated near Beira Lake, the temple showcases Sri Lankan, Chinese, Thai, and Indian architectural influences. Gangaramaya is the most visited temple in Colombo and organizes the largest and most vibrant Vesak Festival annually. Seema Malaka Meditation Center, run by the Gangaramaya Temple, was designed by renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa after the original structure sank underwater. To prevent sinking, Bawa created three floating platforms connected by pontoon walkways and anchored them to the shore through stone pillars.
Pettah - Pettah is one of the oldest districts in Colombo. This multi-ethnic district is one of the busiest, most crowded, and interesting places in Colombo. Pettah market is a stretch of shops from Olcott Mawatha to the main street and beyond. At Pettah market, you can find anything you want, and it is common to see three-wheelers racing, vendors pushing carts piled with goods, and people hurrying along the streets.
Vendors sell fruits, vegetables, meat, clothing, electronics, and jewelry. The Pettah Bazaar is the place to find interesting items at affordable prices. The Pettah Market lies outside the remains of Colombo Fort and is a stretch of shops selling all kinds of goods.
