Following a 3-hour drive, you will arrive at a remarkable location nestled in the jungle. Established in 1998, Metzabok is a protected natural area dedicated to the conservation of flora and fauna, boasting a diverse and delicate ecosystem. It features a blend of high evergreen forest, medium evergreen forest, cloud forest, and secondary vegetation areas at various stages of development. This site holds significant ecological value due to its lakes and rich biodiversity, including species that are threatened or endangered, such as the ocofaisán, harpy eagle, quetzal, and jaguar.
- Metzabok - Throughout the journey, you will learn about the local population, which consists of the Lacandon ethnic group with fewer than 100 residents. You will have approximately 3.5 hours to explore, including a canoe ride with a local Lacandon guide to discover the lagoon and nearby caves. Visiting the area’s cave system offers the unforgettable experience of seeing ancient Mayan cave paintings, shrines, and breathtaking views from the El Mirador cave, a pyramid. A short trek to the mountain’s summit will provide a stunning view of the entire natural reserve. After the visit, there will be an opportunity to enjoy a meal with the locals before returning to the hotel in Palenque.
