- Marche Kermel - The Kermel Market, a colonial-style edifice recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a stunning building from 1860. Although it was destroyed by fire in 1994, it was meticulously rebuilt in 1997. The market is beautifully preserved, showcasing vibrant colors both inside and out. It offers a variety of fresh products typical of Senegal, with market gardeners, grocers, butchers, and fishmongers at its core, surrounded by vendors of decorations, artists, and artisans.
- Presidency of Senegal - The Presidential Palace is a pristine white, expansive, and appealing structure, adorned with greenery and peacocks, and features a red carpet extending from the gate to the corridor. Since Senegal’s independence, the Place de la République has been the residence of the Head of State, located in the historic Plateau district of Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Built in 1902, the Palace was originally the official residence of the Governor General of French West Africa (AOF).
- Cathedral of Our Lady of Victories - The Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, also known as the Cathedral of Africain Souvenir, is the largest church in Dakar and the seat of the archbishops. Located on Boulevard de la République in the Dakar-Plateau district, it was built in the 1930s and consecrated in 1936. The cathedral stands out with its immaculate white color and materials imported from various countries (Sudan, Gabon, Tunisia, Benin, France), resulting in a remarkable blend of influences. Originally a tribute to African soldiers, it was once called the Pantheon of Africa. The cathedral features impressive architecture and extraordinary interior vault paintings. It welcomed Pope John Paul II in 1992. Visitors should note that hats, mini skirts, or shorts are not permitted inside.
- Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine - Inaugurated in 2010, the Monument of African Renaissance is a colossal 52-meter-high bronze statue accessible via a 198-step stairway, offering a stunning view of the peninsula. It symbolizes Africa emerging from darkness into light, with a man, woman, and child facing the sun, representing the continent’s openness to the world. It is the largest statue in the world that can be climbed inside. The ground floor features a slideshow on the monument’s construction history and a fresco depicting Africa’s history and its notable figures. The third floor hosts a temporary exhibition room, the fourth floor the main lounge, and the fifteenth floor offers a breathtaking view from the man’s head of Dakar and the peninsula.
- Dakar Railway Station - A masterpiece of colonial architecture, the Dakar Railway Station boasts a facade of remarkable beauty. Built in 1885, it connected Dakar to St Louis and served the Dakar-Niger line, enabling travel to Bamako (Mali) in 36 hours, twice a week. Tens of thousands of sharpshooters from Sudan, Dahomey, or Haute Volta (now Burkina Faso) passed through this station to embark on European fronts. The station quickly became the most important railway hub in West Africa, a center of city activity, and a transit point for peanuts, Arabic gum, cotton, cola, postal mail, and thousands of travelers. Located at Place Dakar-Niger, renamed Place des Tirailleurs on August 23, 2004, it was rehabilitated by Eiffage Senegal.
- Goree Island - Accessible by boat from the port of Dakar, Goree Island was the first site in West Africa to be classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. It has preserved the remnants of a long history marked by slavery and colonialism. The influence of various colonizing peoples is still evident, and the colorful houses lend the island a Mediterranean charm. The slave house is the only remaining slave hut on the island, built in 1786 and fully restored. Goree Island is one of Africa’s most powerful symbols. Notable sites include the House of Slaves, the imposing West Coast Cannon, the Memorial of the Castel, St. Charles of Borromeo Church, and the mosque, the oldest Islamic stone building in Senegal. Its picturesque architecture transports visitors back in time with the ocher facades of the houses. Dining at a nice restaurant near the ocean is possible, followed by a return to your residence.
