An enjoyable day to remember, a dream fulfilled - Lately I have been giving much thought to my week-long visit to Dakar, Senegal. That week only whetted my appetite to return to visit much more of the country. I traveled solo, but had an organized day tour by Agsil Travel Tours led by the very organized and knowledgeable Amadou Barry. I was picked up at my hotel at the exact specified time by Amadou and the driver. We started by driving around Dakar and visiting such sites as the Kermel Market and the Dakar Cathedral where Pope John Paul 11 visited years ago. We saw much of Dakar, including the drive along the Atlantic Ocean away from the bustle of the city to the impressive African Renaissance Monument and museum near the beaches of Yoff. The museum taught me a lot about famous black historical figures I had often heard about like Malcolm X, Patrice Lumumba and Robert Mugabe. Next came the boat ride to Goree Island. Amadou had arranged for a separate guide for the island. The island, in spite of its tragic history of being very active in the Atlantic slave trade, is very beautiful and peaceful now. The entire day’s tour was most enjoyable and also educational. There is so much more I want to see in Senegal like Bandia Wildlife Park and the colonial town of Saint-Louis. When I return, I will certainly want another tour by Amadou of Agsil Senegal Travel Tour Group

Awesome experience - This excursion was excellent, My tour guide Amadou was good he took me on a tour round Dakar explaining the many things we passed along the way. However my favourite was seeing the African Renaissance monument & going inside learning the history of it all. My main love was travelling to Goree island going on the boat that was phenomenal, It’s such a beautiful little island. Then learning the history behind it was amazing. I would definitely go back again.

Slavery, a shame for our "civilizations" - Slave Island, a sinister name that evokes a terrible story that lasted about three centuries. We stayed in the places where they were kept "fattening" before being sold and sorted. On a trip to Senegal you can not miss the visit to Gore', we heard a summary of its history thanks to the expert explanations of our guide Sole, strong of his degree in history.

Great visit to major Dakar landmarks - Great day trip around Dakar during which we visited some of the main historical and tourist attractions in the city, including Goree Island. Amadou was knowledgeable and adapted the trip to cater to my interests, while being able to answer all of my questions about the history and context behind the locations we visited. Highly recommended!

Goree Island - Maison des Esclaves—The House of Slaves - Nothing can prepare you for the overwhelming flood of emotions that rush through you when you step onto Goree Island. The cobblestone streets, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, seem to guide you toward a place where history’s darkest moments are etched into every corner. This island, so serene on the surface, holds the grim history of the transatlantic slave trade—where human lives were commodified, where brutality from Europeans was the norm, and where the seeds of centuries-long oppression were sown. It’s a place that feels both haunted and hallowed, and as I walked its paths, I realized that I was not ready for what I was about to witness. My guide, had told me to prepare myself. But no amount of preparation can brace you for the weight of history that hits you square in the chest when you approach the doorway marked Maison des Esclaves—the House of Slaves. The moment you see the weathered wooden frame and the words etched above it, your heart starts racing. You realize you’re about to enter a space where lives were shattered, dreams were destroyed, and where unspeakable horrors unfolded behind these very walls. This is where the first human beings—men, women, and children—were kidnapped from their homeland, shackled, and led to the waiting slave ships that would carry them across the Atlantic into a nightmare.

Shambolic tour - Disappointing tour for a hugely inflated price. I took the tour while the ship I was on was in port. The guide had individual sheets of paper for every passenger so couldn't even manage to hold them all up at once. Why not get a board and write all names on it? I and another lady were told to wait while he located other attendees. Ages later, someone from Agsil asked where our guide was. How should we know? Turned out he set off without us. We were put on another bus with an equally useless guide, and the dire organisational skills of Agsil meant we missed the ferry to Gorée Island that we were meant to take so spent another hour sitting waiting for the next one. Once we arrived at the island, I asked if we could wander around and meet back at the ferry, but he insisted we stay together. What a waste of time! He gave us ages at places we didn't need masses of time and skipped others, and he regularly disappeared so we had no idea where he was. Eventually I and others wandered off so we could see the place, and we met up at the ferry. Once we disembarked in Dakar, he decided we didn't have time to see all the places on the itinerary, so we drove past some and skipped others, stopping only to take photos at a monument and mosque. AN APPALLING WASTE OF €190.

Overpriced, deceptive and badly organized - The person at the port was not holding an Agsil sign and did not have our names. The operator mostly did not respond to my messages. The pickup was a big mess! At Goree Island we had only 15 minutes to see the museum because the guide wasted 2.5 hours showing us irrelevant parts of the island and sending us to shops. There was no bottled water in the bus even though the operator informed me that there would be.... We did not stop at Place de l'Independence or Marche Kermel or the Presidential Palace - could not even take a photo in these places. We were not allowed to enter the Cathedral. Overall this was a very expensive tour which was badly organized and not worth the cost at all.
