“The man, the woman and their child will face the sun, symbolizing the opening of the continent to the rest of the world. It is a force of propulsion and attraction in the greatness, stability and sustainability of Africa,” explains President Abdoulaye Wade, who inaugurated it on April 3, 2010. - Mosque of the Divinity - Built in 1997, the Mosque of the Divinity is located in Ouakam, Senegal. This structure features two minarets and offers a view of the Atlantic Ocean, as it sits near the shore along the Corniche-Ouest.
- Sandaga Market - Built in 1935, Sandaga Market’s architecture recalls the Arabian Sudanese style of Timbuktu in Mali. Its decoration blends Arabian and African styles with arabesques and geometric designs.
- Presidential Palace - The Palace of the Republic, residence of the President of the Republic, is a historic manor located in the Plateau district of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Built in 1902, the Palace once served as the official residence of the Governor General of French West Africa.
- Kermel Market - The Kermel Market is a beautiful building dating from 1860 - a lovely round hall of wrought iron and brick with Arabic inspiration - which was ravaged by fire in 1994 and rebuilt identically in 1997, and is now classified as a historical monument. The large clock at the entrance used to ring the closing bell at noon on the dot. At the Kermel Market, one can find all kinds of food products, and it has been frequented by Westerners seeking the best products of the city since its creation.
- The Museum of Black Civilisations - Two objectives emerge for the museum:
- To create a non-ethnographic museum, that is to say one not devoted solely to primitive arts, and not commemorating the slave past of the continent’s populations.
- To show the vitality of the entire African continent through “cultures and civilizations of the black worlds.”
- Grand Mosque of Dakar - The Great Mosque of Dakar was built by French and Moroccan architects and was inaugurated in 1964 by the King of Morocco, Hassan II, who financed its construction. The minaret stands 67 meters tall and is richly decorated both inside and outside.
- Soumbedioune Artisan Market - Created in 1961, this village is a great place to get an idea of what the country’s artisans produce. Gathered by professional category, the craftsmen exhibit a wide choice of sculpted works. There are also all types of leather goods (cow, snake, goat, crocodile) and jewelry.
