Goree Island & Dakar City Tour

Goree Island - This tour offers a visit to the Slave House, a place of pilgrimage and remembrance dedicated to the slave trade, the Castel Memorial, the western tip cannon, and the mosque, the oldest Islamic stone building in Senegal. Its charming architecture transports visitors back in time with the roughcast ocher facades of the houses. Lunch on the island at a lovely restaurant by the ocean is an option. Return to Dakar.

Dakar Railway Station - A stunning example of colonial architecture, its facade is remarkably beautiful. Built in 1885, Dakar Station connected the city to St. Louis and served the Dakar-Niger line, allowing travel to Bamako (Mali) in 36 hours, twice a week. Located at Place Dakar-Niger, renamed Place des Tirailleurs on August 23, 2004, it has been restored by Eiffage Senegal.

Place de l’Independance - Situated in the vibrant heart of the city, this square is home to majestic colonial buildings, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Governance (office of the French governor), and the Chamber of Commerce. Afterward, the guide will show visitors around the market.

Marche Kermel - Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this beautiful building from 1860 was destroyed by fire in 1994 and rebuilt identically in 1997. The Kermel Market, a colonial-style building, is excellently preserved. It features vibrant colors inside and outside, offering fresh products typical of Senegal. Market gardeners, grocers, butchers, and fishmongers are at the heart of the building, surrounded by decoration vendors, artists, and artisans.

Presidency of Senegal - The Presidential Palace is immaculate white, large, spacious, and attractive with its greenery and peacocks, and a red carpet extending from the portal to the corridor. Since Senegal’s independence, the Place de la République has been the residence of the Head of State, a historic residence located in the Plateau district of Dakar, the capital of Senegal, and has been occupied by the Presidents of Senegal. Built in 1902, the Palace was the official residence of the Governor General of French West Africa (AOF).

Cathedrale du Souvenir Africain de Dakar - The Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, or Cathedral of Souvenir Africain, is the largest church in Dakar and the seat of the archbishops. Located on Boulevard de la République in the Dakar-Plateau district, it was built in the 1930s and consecrated in 1936. The Cathedral of Africain Souvenir stands out in Dakar’s landscape with its immaculate white color. Materials were imported from various countries (Sudan, Gabon, Tunisia, Benin, France) for a unique result with diverse influences. Erected on a former “Lebou” cemetery, it was originally a tribute to African soldiers and was once nicknamed the Pantheon of Africa. A building of formidable architecture with extraordinary interior vault paintings, the cathedral welcomed Pope John Paul II in 1992. If entering, remember that hats, mini skirts, and shorts are prohibited. After the plateau, the tour proceeds to the Monument of African Renaissance.

Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine - Inaugurated in 2010, this gigantic 52-meter-high bronze statue is accessible via a 198-step stairway and offers a beautiful view of the peninsula. The man, woman, and child face the sun, symbolizing the continent’s openness to the world. On the ground floor, a slideshow describes the monument’s construction history, and a fresco retraces Africa’s history and its great figures. The third floor features a small temporary exhibition room, and the fourth floor houses the main lounge. On the fifteenth floor, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of Dakar and the peninsula from the man’s head.

Pink Lake & Lompoul Desert

Lake Retba - Better known as Pink Lake, it is famous for its color, which changes from pink to purple based on the sun’s intensity. The lake is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a large dune, providing a good terrain for crossing the dunes. Thanks to salt collection, the lake has attracted many people for decades, including locals and Guineans and Malians. With water at waist level, they use a picket called “djodj” to tear at the salt crust at the bottom before transferring shovelfuls of salt into canoes. Women offload and pile the salt lakeside to dry and bleach in the sun. Activities include:

• Touring the lake, surrounding Fulani villages, and beach by quad bike, dune truck, or camel strolls
• Boat riding to observe the salt seekers
• Bathing in the lake to enjoy the floating sensation due to the salt, a wonderful experience

Lompoul - After lunch, drive to Lompoul, an orange dunes desert. At Lompoul Village, a dune vehicle will transfer visitors to the desert to observe the sunset, with the possibility of camel riding.

Lompoul-Saint Louis

Saint-Louis - Travel to the old city of St. Louis, the former capital of Senegal, and explore the World Heritage site by horse carriage tour. See the former French governor’s residence, Faidherbe Bridge, French trading company shops, and the fisherfolk between the ocean and the river. Enjoy lunch in a typical restaurant in St. Louis city. In the afternoon, take advantage of the beach or pool, and have dinner at the hotel or in town.

Gouvernance de Saint Louis - Arriving on the island by crossing the Faidherbe Bridge, the view is dominated by a block of buildings: the governance of the old colonial fort, with walls of a very thick base and remnants of the first buttresses visible from the street. To the west, the governance opens onto a shady square named after Governor Faidherbe, whose statue sits in the garden. Place Faidherbe, first called the Savannah, then Place d’Orleans, is bordered by the northern and southern Roghat barracks. On either side of this central square are the island’s two districts: the south and the north. Along the way, discover old buildings with typical architecture.

St Louis-Touba-Delta of Saloum

Parc National du Delta du Saloum - Depart for Ndagane, observing Wolof villages and the savannah dominated by baobab trees, as well as nomads with their large herds. Stop at Ndangane at the river’s edge, where a motorized boat will be waiting. These amazing boats are the typical means of transport for the region’s inhabitants. Once on board, take a tour along the magnificent Saloum Delta, where the Sine and Saloum rivers converge and flow into the Atlantic Ocean. As the boat cruises downstream, admire the magical landscapes filled with mangroves, marshes, and palm trees, and see various species of exotic birds like magnificent pelicans. Spend the night at Marloth Island.

Marloth Island

Parc National du Delta du Saloum - In the morning, discover the mangroves and enjoy a picnic in nature (with the possibility of a fishing party). Visit Bird Island and the Bolongs of Saloum to see pelicans, herons, cormorants, and egrets. In the afternoon, take a horse carriage tour to explore the savannah and surrounding villages.

Joal Fadiouth-Mbour-Saly

Joal Fadiouth - Depart for the twin village of Joal and Fadiouth, visiting one of the largest baobab trees in West Africa along the way. Joal is the birthplace of Senegal’s first president, Leopold Sedar Senghor, offering a magnificent panorama of Fadiouth Island, linked to the mainland by a long wooden bridge. Fadiouth is famous for its millet granaries and mixed Catholic and Muslim cemetery. Built on a collection of piled-up shells over the centuries, a stroll through its narrow streets and a boat ride with a guide is recommended. Enjoy lunch before departure.

Mbour - Mbour, the main town, is a lively fishing port of 4,500 inhabitants, 5 km from the seaside resort of Saly. The town, capital of the Mbour department and subdivision of the Thiès region, remains typically African with intense traffic of vintage cars and horse-drawn carriages. A permanent market is held along the coastal strip, while the fish market takes place on the beach. Numerous drying rooms and fish dens are present. Mbour is the second port in Senegal, after Dakar. Depart for Saly.

Saly-Bandia Safari

Reserve De Bandia - This visit to the Bandia reserve offers the opportunity to observe wildlife up close in an environmentally friendly nature setting. Upon arrival, a 4×4 WD specially used for safari will be taken. This 3,500 ha park is home to many animals, some reintroduced to Senegal after having disappeared for a long time, such as rhinoceros, giraffes, large antelopes, dama gazelles, Derby elks, buffalos, patas monkeys, vervets, warthogs, hippotragues, and jackals. Return to Saly in the afternoon, with free time to enjoy the beach or shopping.

Saly - In the seaside town of Saly (not far from Mbour), the best-known beaches in Senegal are found, lined with palm trees, restaurants, bars, and villas. The beaches of Saly are ideal for swimming and water sports such as diving and jet-skiing. The Saly seafront is full of comfortable hotels and attracts many tourists throughout the year. Saly is also famous for fishing, its nightlife with restaurants and bars, and its golf course.
