Residents of Son Tra Peninsula recount that during the reign of King Minh Mang (Nguyen Dynasty, 19th century), a Buddha statue mysteriously appeared on a sandbank. Seeing this as a favorable omen, the locals built a shrine for worship, which brought stability to the area and allowed fishermen to work peacefully for an extended period. The sandbank, where the Buddha statue appeared, was named Bai But (meaning Buddha land on earth) and is the site where Linh Ung Pagoda stands today.
