Hue Imperial City (The Citadel) - Visit the Citadel, Hue’s main attraction, featuring the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City, and the Emperor’s Private Residence. The Citadel faces the Huong River (Perfume River) to the southeast and was the seat of power until the French protectorate in the 1880s. It continued to hold symbolic significance until the monarchy ended in 1945. The Purple Forbidden City once had numerous buildings and rooms but suffered from neglect and weather damage. Despite this, the Imperial City remains impressive, with bullet holes from 20th-century conflicts still visible. Out of 160 buildings, only 10 major sites remain, including the Thái Hòa and Cần Thanh temples, Thế Miếu, and Hiển Lâm Các. Designated a UNESCO site in 1993, restoration efforts are ongoing, so some areas may be inaccessible.
Hai Van Pass - Renowned as Vietnam’s most marvelous wonder, featured on Top Gear.
Thien Mu Pagoda - Considered by many as Hue’s unofficial symbol. Reach the Pagoda by taking a local Dragon Boat cruise up the Perfume River. Thien Mu is an active Buddhist monastery dating back to 1601. A notable display is a car belonging to a monk who self-immolated in 1963 to protest the South Vietnamese regime’s treatment of Buddhists.
Perfume River - Enjoy a 30-minute boat ride on the Perfume River.
Tomb of Khai Dinh - Among the seven significant imperial tombs along the Perfume River, this tomb uniquely blends Western and Eastern architecture. Built for Khải Định, the twelfth Emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty, it took 11 years to complete from 1920 to 1931. It is situated on a steep hill outside Huế’s capital city.
