Exploring Cyprus: A Historian’s Delight in Ancient Landmarks
As a former European history professor, the allure of Cyprus’ ancient landmarks was irresistible. Join me as I recount my journey through the island’s storied past, from medieval castles to ancient amphitheaters.
A Journey Through Time: Kolossi Castle and Kourion
Our adventure began with a sense of anticipation as we set off from Limassol, a city that has long been a crossroads of cultures and civilizations. Our first destination was the imposing Kolossi Castle, a testament to the island’s medieval past. Built by the Crusaders in the 13th century, this three-story fortress stands as a remarkable example of military architecture. As I stood before its stone walls, I couldn’t help but imagine the knights who once roamed these halls, strategizing their next move in the tumultuous history of the Crusades.
Our guide, Dena, provided us with a wealth of information about the castle’s history and its significance in the broader context of European medieval warfare. Her insights were invaluable, painting a vivid picture of the past. After a brief photo stop, we continued our journey to the Kourion archaeological site, one of Cyprus’ most significant historical treasures. Perched on a hillside overlooking the azure waters of the Mediterranean, Kourion’s ruins date back to the Roman and early Byzantine periods.
The highlight of Kourion was undoubtedly the ancient amphitheater, where we tried the famous coin test. The acoustics were indeed remarkable, as the sound of a coin dropping on the stage could be heard clearly from the top rows. It was a moment that connected us to the ancient world, a reminder of the ingenuity and artistry of those who came before us.
The Enchanting Village of Omodos and the Monastery of the Holy Cross
Leaving the coastal ruins behind, we ventured into the Troodos Mountains, where the picturesque village of Omodos awaited us. Nestled among vineyards and surrounded by verdant hills, Omodos is a place where time seems to stand still. The village’s narrow alleys and stone houses exude a charm that is quintessentially Cypriot.
Our visit to the Monastery of the Holy Cross was a highlight of the day. This sacred site, connected to St. Helen’s passage to Cyprus, is steeped in history and spirituality. As we wandered through the monastery’s tranquil courtyards, I felt a profound sense of peace. The monastery’s architecture, with its tiled roofs and ornate gateways, is a testament to the island’s rich religious heritage.
In Omodos, we also had the opportunity to explore the local wine culture. The village is part of the Krasochoria, or wine-making villages, and we were treated to a tasting at the Lambouri Winery. The wines, including the famous Comandaria, were exquisite, offering a taste of Cyprus’ ancient vinicultural traditions.
Limassol’s Old Town: A Walk Through History
Our final stop was the old town of Limassol, a place where history and modernity coexist in harmony. Accompanied by our guide, we strolled through the narrow streets, each corner revealing a new story. The medieval castle, where Richard the Lionheart is said to have married Berengaria of Navarre, was a particular highlight. Standing in the shadow of its ancient walls, I could almost hear the echoes of medieval celebrations.
As we wandered through the bustling streets, we encountered a vibrant mix of cafes, restaurants, and shops. The old fishing harbor, with its colorful boats and lively atmosphere, was a perfect place to reflect on the day’s adventures. With a few hours to spare before returning to the ship, my wife and I enjoyed a leisurely coffee, savoring the flavors of Cyprus and the warmth of its people.
This excursion was more than just a tour; it was a journey through time, a chance to connect with the island’s rich history and culture. From the ancient ruins of Kourion to the serene beauty of Omodos, Cyprus revealed itself as a land of endless stories and timeless charm. I left with a deeper appreciation for this Mediterranean gem and a desire to return and explore even more of its hidden treasures.
