- Chinchero - This charming village is situated 28 km from Cusco, along the paved road to Urubamba. It features the remnants of the royal estate of Tupac Inca Yupanqui and a stunning colonial temple built on Inca foundations.
The main highlight is its artisanal market, which originally served as a bartering hub for agricultural products between valley dwellers and those from higher regions. Today, the market is a vibrant display of color and activity, captivating visitors with its array of crafts and textiles crafted in the authentic pre-Columbian style.
- Moray - Located 7 km from Maras and an hour from Cusco city via the Chinchero route, Moray is a must-see destination. It showcases circular platforms of varying sizes, which were used as agricultural terraces for experimentation. These are also believed to be centers of female energy, recognized as a magnetic hub of the Pachamama.
- Salinas de Maras - Situated northwest of Maras, these are often referred to as “salt mines” and consist of approximately 3,000 small wells. Salt has been harvested here since pre-Hispanic times using a sun-drying method for saltwater from an underground stream. Once the water evaporates, the salt is ready for sale.
- Archaeological Park Ollantaytambo - This typical Inca village is 21 km from Urubamba (2800 m) and is named after the chieftain Ollanta, known for his romance with an Inca princess, the daughter of Pachacútec. One of its best-preserved areas lies north of Hanan Huacaypata Square, featuring 15 blocks of mansions built on stone walls.
The expansive archaeological site on the hill overlooking the village includes notable structures like the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana, and the Baths of the Princess. From Ollantaytambo, a path leads to the Malaga open road (4200 meters above sea level) and into the jungle edge, passing through picturesque towns like Huilloc, home to renowned weavers.
- Urubamba - Urubamba provides stunning views of the Sacred Valley and serves as a lunch and rest stop, where visitors can savor Peruvian cuisine.
- Pisac - Located 33 km from Cusco on a paved road in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Pisac boasts an ancient village and an archaeological site considered among the most significant in Cusco, alongside a modern village of colonial origin.
Pisac is also home to a famous artisan market that draws thousands of visitors and community members from distant villages, who don colorful traditional attire. It is advisable to purchase crafts here, as they are typically more affordable than in Cusco city.
