Cusco - The journey through the Sacred Valley towards Machu Picchu starts bright and early with hotel pick-up between 6:30 and 7:00 AM. Departing from Cusco, the drive takes us through the stunning Andes, passing picturesque valleys shaped by rivers.
Our initial stop is the town of Chinchero, where ancient traditions thrive. Here, a visit to a cultural center reveals how locals naturally dye alpaca and llama wool. It’s a wonderful chance to witness Andean customs that have been handed down through generations.
Salt Maras Peru - The adventure continues to Moray, known for its intriguing circular terraces constructed by the Incas. These terraces served as agricultural labs, with each level offering a unique microclimate. This remarkable engineering feat allowed experimentation with crops from different ecological zones, showcasing Inca agricultural expertise.
Next, we visit the Maras Salt Mines, where countless salt pools shimmer on the mountainside. These salt pans, in use since pre-Inca times, remain active today. Walking along the narrow paths, we admire the geometric beauty of the site and learn about the ancient methods of salt production and trade.
Urubamba - In the afternoon, a delightful buffet lunch awaits in Urubamba, a town nestled in the Sacred Valley’s heart. Following lunch, we proceed to the impressive Ollantaytambo fortress, a stunning example of Inca military architecture. Exploring its well-preserved temples and terraces, we absorb both the history and the breathtaking views.
Aguas Calientes - To conclude the day, we head to the Ollantaytambo train station and board a train to Aguas Calientes. The scenic train ride offers views of lush valleys, flowing rivers, and the edge of the cloud forest. Arriving in Aguas Calientes in the evening, we rest and prepare for the next day’s highlight, the visit to Machu Picchu.
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
Aguas Calientes - The most eagerly awaited day of the trip begins with a hearty breakfast in Aguas Calientes. Once ready, we walk to the bus station for a 20-minute ride up the mountain to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary entrance, enjoying breathtaking views en route.
Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu - At the entrance, a professional guide meets us for a 2-hour guided tour of the site. We explore iconic spots like the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon, and the Temple of the Condor. Along the way, we learn about the Incas’ remarkable engineering, architectural prowess, and spiritual beliefs.
After the guided tour, there is free time to explore Machu Picchu at leisure. This is the perfect opportunity to wander through the terraces, capture stunning photos, or discover hidden corners of the citadel independently.
For those seeking more adventure, optional hikes to viewpoints such as the Inca Bridge or the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) are available. These short treks offer incredible panoramic views and a deeper connection with the sacred Andes surroundings.
Cusco - When ready, we take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes. There, relaxation in the town’s natural hot springs (optional) or browsing local shops and cafés is possible.
In the afternoon, we board the train back to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival, private transport awaits to take us to Cusco, where we return in the evening, completing a magical journey through the heart of the Inca world.
