The adventure with Happy Gringo Tours is the best! - A horseback tour to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is one of the most popular day trips from Cusco, but the experience is very different from what many travelers expect. While the photos online make it look like an easy scenic ride to a colorful mountain, the reality involves an extremely early start, very high altitude, unpredictable weather, and mixed tour quality. Still, for many travelers, it ends up being a memorable and worthwhile adventure.
The day usually begins very early. Most tours pick you up from your hotel around 4:30–4:55 AM, followed by a long drive of about 2.5 to 3 hours through the Andes before reaching the trailhead. This early start is necessary to avoid crowds and to catch clearer weather conditions at the mountain. The drive itself can be beautiful but also tiring since you’re likely running on very little sleep.
After arriving at the base area, many tours stop for a simple breakfast before continuing to the trailhead. From there, you’ll see dozens of local horse owners offering rides up the mountain. Renting a horse is common because the altitude is extremely high. The trail begins around 4,650 meters (15,255 ft) and reaches roughly 5,200 meters (17,000 ft) near the viewpoint. Even fit travelers often struggle to breathe at this elevation.
The horseback option helps significantly. Instead of hiking for 1–2 hours uphill, you ride a horse along a gradual mountain trail for about 45 minutes to an hour. Each horse is typically led by a local handler walking beside it, which makes the ride manageable even for beginners. For people who are worried about altitude or physical effort, this can make the trip much more accessible.
That said, horseback riding does not eliminate the challenge completely. The horses cannot reach the very top of the mountain, so the final 15 minutes must still be done on foot, often on a steep path where the altitude really hits you. Many visitors feel short of breath, dizzy, or fatigued during this final stretch. Even travelers who ride horses most of the way often say this last part is surprisingly difficult.
The scenery along the way is impressive. The landscape looks almost otherworldly, with wide valleys, grazing alpacas and llamas, and snow-covered peaks in the distance. The colorful mineral stripes of Rainbow Mountain itself are striking and make for great photos. Many travelers say the surrounding mountains and views are actually just as beautiful as the famous rainbow slopes.
However, one of the most common complaints about the tour is the crowds. Rainbow Mountain has become one of the most visited attractions in Peru after Machu Picchu, which means hundreds of tourists can arrive at the viewpoint around the same time. When you reach the top, it can sometimes feel more like a busy lookout point than a remote mountain.
Another issue travelers often mention is the weather. Conditions change quickly in the Andes, and fog, snow, or clouds can appear suddenly. During the rainy season, poor visibility can hide the mountain colors entirely. Some visitors report hiking or riding all the way up only to see the mountain partially covered by clouds.
Tour quality also varies a lot depending on the operator. Many tours include breakfast, lunch, and transportation, and good guides can make a big difference by monitoring altitude sickness and keeping the group safe. However, cheaper tours sometimes feel rushed or overcrowded. A few travelers also report issues with guides or disorganization, which can detract from the experience.
Altitude is probably the biggest factor that determines whether people enjoy the trip. Travelers who attempt the tour too soon after arriving in Cusco often feel sick or exhausted. As one traveler put it:
Horse or no horse, you will feel it.
For this reason, many guides recommend spending two or three days acclimatizing in Cusco before attempting Rainbow Mountain.
Despite the challenges, most travelers still consider the experience worthwhile. Riding a horse through the Andes, seeing traditional mountain communities, and standing at over 5,036 meters above sea level is a unique experience that few places in the world can offer.
The Rainbow Mountain horseback tour is best described as beautiful but demanding. The scenery is spectacular, but the early start, altitude, crowds, and unpredictable weather mean it’s not the relaxing excursion some people expect. If you go prepared with warm clothing, cash for a horse, and realistic expectation. It can still be one of the most memorable days of a trip to Peru.

Amazing Guides! - Mauro & Edwin were amazing guides and had a great sense of humor and advice for the Cusco area! The day started with a early pickup, then a buffet breakfast, we made it to the rainbow mountain. I got to go horseback riding there which I would recommend because it is fun and easy with the altitude. Mauro is a excellent photographer. We had extra time so we went to a really cool glacier lake as well that was on a newly made road nearby. Then we finished the day with a fantastic buffet lunch!
