Journey Through Time: My 2 Day Inca Trail Adventure to Machu Picchu
As a biologist and environmental activist, I was drawn to the 2 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu for its promise of breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural history. Join me as I recount my journey through the Andes, exploring ancient ruins and the vibrant biodiversity of this iconic trail.
The Early Morning Departure
The day began before the sun had even considered rising. As a single mother and a passionate environmental activist, my days are often filled with the hustle and bustle of balancing work and family. But this day was different. I was embarking on the 2 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, a journey that promised to be both a personal adventure and a professional exploration of the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of the Andes.
Our guide, Edson, picked us up before 5 am, and we made our way to Ollantaytambo to catch the 6:40 am train. The early start was softened by the comfort of the train, where I found myself drifting into a peaceful sleep, lulled by the gentle rhythm of the tracks. As we traveled, I couldn’t help but think about the microclimates we would soon be traversing, from the high Andes to the lush cloud forests, each with its unique flora and fauna.
The Journey Through History
Upon reaching km 104, we met our guide, Luis, who would lead us on the trail. The path we took was an alternative route, as the usual trail was closed due to the rainy season. This detour, however, offered its own unique challenges and rewards. The trail was demanding, but the breathtaking views and the wealth of knowledge shared by Luis made every step worthwhile.
As a biologist, I was particularly fascinated by the plants we encountered along the way. Luis shared insights into the Quechua and Inca cultures, explaining the uses of various plants for cooking and medicinal purposes. It was a living classroom, and I was eager to absorb every detail.
Our stop at Wiñay Wayna was a highlight. The ancient ruins, nestled amidst the verdant landscape, were a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Inca civilization. We spent about 40 minutes exploring the site, with Luis providing a detailed account of its historical significance. As we continued our hike, the anticipation of reaching the Sun Gate and catching our first glimpse of Machu Picchu kept our spirits high.
The Majestic Machu Picchu
Arriving at the Sun Gate around 5 pm, we were greeted by the awe-inspiring sight of Machu Picchu bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun. It was a moment of pure magic, one that I captured in countless photographs, each trying to do justice to the grandeur before me.
The following day, we returned to explore the citadel itself. Luis, with his extensive knowledge of the site, guided us through the prime attractions, sharing stories of Inca life and the architectural marvels that surrounded us. His tips on navigating the site to avoid the crowds were invaluable, allowing us to experience the tranquility and majesty of Machu Picchu in a more intimate setting.
As we made our way back to Cusco, I reflected on the journey. It was more than just a trek; it was an immersion into a world where nature and history intertwined seamlessly. The experience reinforced my commitment to conservation and the importance of preserving these incredible landscapes for future generations. The 2 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was not just a journey through the Andes, but a journey into the heart of a culture that continues to inspire and captivate.
