- Curtea de Arges Monastery - Begin your journey at one of Romania’s most exquisite architectural wonders. The Curtea de Argeș Monastery, a breathtaking 16th-century limestone structure, is steeped in a poignant local legend of sacrifice. It serves as the final resting place for Romania’s royalty. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the graceful grounds and discover its intricate, ornate design.
- Vidraru Dam - Continue the adventure by heading further into the mountains to visit Vidraru Dam, an impressive feat of engineering from the communist era. Towering over 166 meters, it contains a vast, unspoiled lake encircled by lush pine forests. Weather permitting, visitors may catch a view of the peaks along the renowned Transfăgărășan highway.
-
Poenari Citadel - High atop a steep cliff overlooking the Argeș River stands Poenari Fortress. Unlike Bran Castle, which Dracula scarcely visited, Poenari was the true mountain fortress of Vlad the Impaler, constructed by his captives.
Note: Due to its remote location, the fortress’s dramatic and imposing ruins will be admired from a distance. Access to the summit via the 1,480 steps is contingent upon local wildlife safety regulations (bears).

- The Carpathian Mountains are home to wild brown bears. While safe inside the vehicle or at standard viewpoints, always follow your guide’s instructions.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. If climbing to Poenari is permitted during your visit, be prepared for a steep hike (1,480 stairs). Modest clothing (covered shoulders/knees) is required inside Curtea de Argeș Monastery.
- ring local currency (RON) for entrance tickets and small souvenir shops along the way.
- Due to its wild location in the Carpathian Mountains, access to the top of Poenari Fortress (via the 1,480 stairs) is strictly regulated by local authorities due to wild brown bear activity and safety measures. Access may be restricted to specific hours or closed entirely during bad weather/winter. If climbing is restricted on the day of your tour, we will still stop at the base of the mountain to admire and photograph this incredible cliffside stronghold from the best viewpoints, while your guide shares its fascinating history.
