• Wray Castle - Begin the afternoon with a visit to Wray Castle, offering breathtaking scenery and lake views. This is the holiday retreat where Beatrix first fell in love with the Lake District.
• Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery - Located near Hill Top, Esthwaite Water is where Beatrix strolled while courting her future husband, William Heelis. It was a beloved spot for Beatrix, who considered it “the most beautiful of the Lakes.”
• Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s House - During her holidays, Beatrix explored many small villages in the area, with Near Sawrey becoming her favorite. This village appears in many of her “little books” illustrations. The Tower Bank Arms is instantly recognizable as the place where Kep, the collie-dog, searches for the two fox-hound puppies to rescue Jemima Puddle-duck. You’ll be amazed to see it, just as it is in the book!

One reason Beatrix frequently visited Near Sawrey was that while vacationing in the area, the Potter’s coachman and his family stayed at a farm there. That farm was Hill Top, which Beatrix later purchased with the profits from publishing Peter Rabbit. She often visited her ‘holiday home’ Hill Top and wrote many more books here, inspired by the people and places around her in this beautiful part of England.

We stop at Near Sawrey and Hill Top for you to explore the locations so familiar from the books and the place where Beatrix Potter lived. Entry to Hill Top is included in the tour price.

Our guide will lead you on a short walk through the village, highlighting the various locations Beatrix used in her books.

The Beatrix Potter Afternoon Tour is a captivating journey that allows you to delve into the stunning landscapes of the Lake District and explore the heritage of the celebrated writer and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. The agenda includes a stopover at Wray Castle, where Beatrix Potter spent her initial summer in the Lakes. Your visit to her residence at Hilltop is included in your ticket (no additional charges). Additionally, you get the opportunity to traverse Hawkshead, an idyllic village Potter was familiar with, and stop by other sites connected to Potter’s life and illustrations, ensuring a memorable and insightful afternoon excursion.

• The English Lake District weather can change quickly, even in the summer months. Please bring a waterproof coat with a hood in case of rain or windy weather
• As there is a little walking involved on the tour, some uphill and on uneven or wet terrain, please wear suitable, comfortable shoes
• Children must be accompanied by an adult
• All passengers, including children of any age, must have a seat purchased for them
• We will collect you from the departure point linked to your chosen option. Please do not change to a different departure point without informing us in advance as we don’t automatically go to every departure point. If we don’t know you have changed your departure point we may not pick you up for the tour!
