- Chateau de Queribus - The journey begins in the morning with a visit to two remarkable ruined castles. The first stop is Quéribus Castle, also known as the “citadelle du vertige,” which promises a stunning and literally breathtaking view. During the Cathar crusade, Queribus provided refuge to the Cathars and is often considered their last stronghold. After the fall of Montsegur Castle in 1244, surviving Cathars gathered in the Corbières at another mountain-top fortress on the Aragon border (now the border between the Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales department).
Queribus is perched high and isolated, standing atop the tallest peak for miles. It can be seen from afar, rising into the sky.
Lunch is enjoyed in the charming village of Cucugnan. Afterward, take a leisurely walk through the medieval streets of this picturesque village and visit the windmill, surrounded by vineyards. According to the old mill at the village’s summit, the tale goes that the baker of Cucugnan, with the cooperation of local farmers, mastered bread production using the now-abandoned wheat variety known as the Bearded Roussillon.
- Chateau de Peyrepertuse - Next, the journey continues to Peyrepertuse Castle, a ruined fortress and one of the Cathar castles. It was linked to the Counts of Barcelona and later the kings of Aragon. The name Peyrepertuse comes from Peirapertusa, the Occitan word for “pierced rock.” The lower part of the castle was strategically built by the Kings of Aragon in the 11th century, and the upper part by French King Louis IX later, after the area was annexed to France. The two sections of the castle were connected by a staircase. The castle lost its strategic importance when the border between France and Spain shifted in 1659, leading to its abandonment. The castle ruins are impressive, set high on a defensive crag. From the approach road, it is challenging to discern where the rock ends and the castle begins.
