Exploring Australia’s Untouched Wildlife: A Journey Through French and Phillip Islands

Drawn by the promise of pristine wildlife and eco-friendly exploration, I embarked on the Phillip Island and French Island Wildlife Expedition. Join me as I recount a day filled with breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable encounters with Australia’s native creatures.

A Windy Start to a Wildlife Adventure

As an advocate for sustainable tourism, I am always on the lookout for eco-friendly adventures that allow travelers to connect with nature without leaving a heavy footprint. The Phillip Island and French Island Wildlife Expedition seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore some of Australia’s pristine wildlife habitats. My journey began in downtown Melbourne, where I was picked up near Her Majesty’s Theater by our guide, Lucky. His punctuality and friendly demeanor set the tone for what promised to be an unforgettable day.

The weather was not on our side initially, with strong winds threatening to cancel our ferry ride to French Island. However, as we reached Mornington, the skies cleared, and we were able to embark on our journey across the crystal blue waters of Western Port Bay. Our guides, Scott and Nathan, were not only knowledgeable but also passionate about the unique ecosystem of French Island. As we traversed the island, we were treated to sightings of echidnas and koalas, each encounter a reminder of the delicate balance of nature that we must strive to protect.

Discovering French Island’s Hidden Treasures

French Island is a hidden gem, a sanctuary for wildlife and a testament to the beauty of untouched nature. Our exploration included a stop at Mandalay Estate, where we enjoyed a hearty lunch of beef “sloppy joe,” coleslaw, and bread, accompanied by a glass of local wine. The estate’s resident peacock added a touch of whimsy to our meal, while the tour of the property led by Lee, one of the proprietors, offered a closer look at the island’s flora and fauna.

The sight of koalas nestled in oak trees was unexpected, yet it highlighted the adaptability of these creatures. We also encountered Cape Barren Geese and a Kookaburra, each species playing a vital role in the island’s ecosystem. French Island’s commitment to preserving its natural environment aligns with my own values, and it was heartening to see conservation efforts in action.

The Magic of Phillip Island’s Penguin Parade

Our adventure continued as we boarded the ferry to Phillip Island, where we reunited with Lucky for a tour of Cowes and the surrounding countryside. The landscape was breathtaking, with volcanic rock formations known as the Nobbies providing a dramatic backdrop to our journey. Wallabies and Cape Barren Geese were a common sight, their presence a testament to the island’s thriving wildlife.

The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the Penguin Parade at sunset. Seated in the Penguin Plus area, we watched in awe as the little penguins emerged from the sea, waddling up the beach to their hillside burrows. The experience was magical, a reminder of the wonders of nature and the importance of protecting these habitats for future generations. The strict no-photography policy after sunset ensured that the penguins’ journey was undisturbed, a practice I wholeheartedly support.

Reflecting on this expedition, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty and for the guides who shared their knowledge and passion with us. The Phillip Island and French Island Wildlife Expedition is more than just a tour; it’s a call to action for sustainable travel and conservation. I encourage all who seek to explore the world to do so with respect and care for the environment, ensuring that these precious landscapes remain for generations to come.
