• Durham Market Place - At the historic Market Place, our meeting point in the city’s center, we will admire the 19th Century Town Hall and Guildhall, St. Nicolas’ Church, and statues commemorating the city’s rich history. We will learn about the influential figures who have shaped the city and county. From here, we will take a short stroll to Framwellgate Bridge.
• Framwellgate Bridge - The city’s oldest bridge offers a stunning view of Durham Castle and Cathedral. Here, we will delve into the history of the Castle and the renowned Prince Bishops of Durham before enjoying a scenic riverside walk to our next destination. The walk to the next stop will take approximately 5 minutes.
• Prebends Bridge - On the way to Prebends Bridge, we will explore the city’s mills and riverbanks, taking in breathtaking views of the Cathedral from Prebends Bridge.
• St Cuthbert’s Society • Durham University - As we head to the South Bailey, we will encounter the medieval city wall and explore the historic rivalry with the Scots before entering the Bailey, home to Durham University.
• St Mary the Less - Now part of St. John’s College, St. Mary the Less has intriguing connections with Durham legends. We will explore their stories here while admiring the Bailey’s fascinating architecture.
• Dun Cow Lane - On the Cathedral’s eastern side, we can delve into some dark aspects of Norman history and learn about some of the Bailey colleges.
• Kingsgate Footbridge - Discover the gruesome story behind this site’s namesake while appreciating some controversial 20th-century architecture.
• Durham Crown Court - Durham’s 200-year-old prison has housed some of England’s most notorious criminals. Learn about how prisoners exercised, escaped, and were executed.
• The Racecourse - Now part of Durham University, the Old Racecourse is a lesser-known part of the city.
• The Dun Cow - The city’s oldest pub. A perfect spot for locals to enjoy a day out and witness a hanging from the gallows.
• Elvet Bridge - At the historic Elvet Bridge, hear the tragic tales of some of the city’s former residents, some of whom are still believed to linger today.
• Durham Cathedral - We enter the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site on Palace Green and explore the various historic buildings around Palace Green. Here, we will discuss the battles, tragedies, and miracles that are central to Durham’s story, culminating at the doors of Durham Cathedral.
