The reserve spans 10,500 hectares and encompasses six distinct life zones. The climate and terrain of the reserve foster an incredible level of biodiversity.
In the highest regions of the rainforest, there are at least 400 bird species, including the resplendent Quetzal, once revered as the sacred bird of the Mayans. Additionally, there are over 100 mammal species, 120 species of amphibians and reptiles, and around 2,500 plant species, making Monteverde a true haven for bird enthusiasts. The reserve experiences both wet and dry seasons, although the higher areas are often shrouded in fog and receive substantial rainfall throughout the year.
