Experience steaming fumaroles, mini-geysers, and bubbling volcanic mud pits. The Las Pailas loop trail spans 2.5 miles (3.5 km) through dry tropical forest, offering the best views of the volcano, stunning nature, volcanic activity, and wildlife. The park hosts over 300 bird species and other animals such as armadillos, collared peccaries, iguanas, snakes, white-nosed coatis, and white-faced, howler, and spider monkeys.
- Oropendola Waterfall - After completing the hike, visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim at the Oropendola waterfall. It is a short walk from the national park entrance along a trail with varied terrain leading down to the river bottom. The Oropendola waterfall cascades an impressive 82 feet (25 meters) into a sparkling turquoise pool within the lush canyon of the Rio Blanco (White River), creating a picturesque tropical oasis.
- Rio Negro Hot Springs - Rich in minerals, the thermal waters possess rejuvenating and therapeutic properties that have been valued for centuries worldwide. Beautiful and relaxing, the volcanic hot springs bubble up on the Rio Negro, naturally heated by the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano — the largest and most active volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Surrounded by a dense dry tropical forest, the Rio Negro Hot Springs area is both beautiful and tranquil. The crystal-clear waters of the river flow near the 10 pools built on the riverbank, filled with mineral-rich thermal waters, naturally heated deep within the volcano. Access to the pools on both sides of the river is possible via two suspension bridges. For a rejuvenating body treatment, visitors can apply hot volcanic mud, which acts like a spa body masque. Once the mud dries, it can be rinsed off in the cold river waters before re-entering the thermal water pools.
- Curubande - After visiting the hot springs, the journey continues to Curubande Village for a traditional Costa Rican lunch.
