Catching Waves and Smiles: My Bodyboarding Adventure in Newquay
When I heard about the Taster Bodyboard Lesson in Newquay, Cornwall, I couldn’t resist the chance to try something new. Join me as I dive into the world of bodyboarding and discover the thrill of catching waves in this stunning coastal town.
Rediscovering the Joy of Bodyboarding
As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves in Central America, but when I heard about the Taster Bodyboard Lesson in Newquay, Cornwall, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to try something a little different. Bodyboarding, with its smaller, lighter boards, offers a unique thrill, and I was eager to see how it compared to my usual surfing adventures.
Upon arriving in Newquay, I was greeted by the stunning coastline and the welcoming team at the Newquay Activity Centre. The lesson was led by a group of experienced instructors, all trained by former European Number 1 and British Team Bodyboarding Coach Rob Barber. Their passion for bodyboarding was infectious, and I felt an immediate sense of camaraderie with the group.
The lesson began with a brief introduction to the basics of bodyboarding, including how to paddle out, trim correctly, and select the right waves. Despite my surfing background, I found the techniques surprisingly different, and it was refreshing to be a beginner again, learning new skills and feeling the rush of catching my first wave.
Embracing the Bodyboarding Community
One of the highlights of the experience was the sense of community among the participants and instructors. Chris, Warwick, James, Amy, and Jacob were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive, creating an environment where everyone felt encouraged to push their limits.
The daily video reviews were a game-changer, allowing me to see exactly what I was doing right and where I needed to improve. The subtle adjustments suggested by the instructors made a significant difference in my performance, and I appreciated their attention to detail and personalized feedback.
The camaraderie extended beyond the water, with plenty of laughs and even a few beers shared after a long day of riding waves. It reminded me of the tight-knit surfing communities I’ve encountered in my travels, where the love for the ocean and the thrill of the ride bring people together.
The Addictive Nature of Bodyboarding
As the week progressed, I found myself increasingly hooked on bodyboarding. The feeling of speed and exhilaration as I caught a green wave was unlike anything I’d experienced before, and I understood why so many people find this sport addictive.
The instructors’ deep understanding of local conditions ensured that we always had the best possible waves to practice on, and their encouragement gave me the confidence to tackle more challenging spots like Towan at high tide. It was a reminder of the importance of local knowledge and the value of having skilled guides to enhance the experience.
By the end of the week, I was not only more skilled but also more connected to the bodyboarding community in Newquay. The experience reignited my passion for the ocean and left me eager to return for more sessions with Rob’s team. Bodyboarding may be different from surfing, but the joy and thrill it brings are universal, and I can’t wait to dive back in.
