- Nyboders Mindestuer - To truly understand hygge, it’s essential to journey back in time. The Hygge & Happiness tour begins near the iconic yellow houses of Nyboder, a renowned local area. Here, participants will meet their native guide and fellow group members for the day. The guide, a genuine Copenhagener, is eager to share insights into Danish culture and local historical secrets not found in guidebooks. With small group sizes, the guide can address any questions participants may have.
- Copenhagen - The tour explores the city’s oldest areas, revealing hidden treasures like cobblestone streets, timber-framed houses, and serene green spaces amidst the urban landscape. Krusemyntegade is a cobblestone street that exudes hygge with its old-world charm, showcasing the city’s hyggelig nature when one takes the time to explore.
- Kastellet - Kastellet is a place in Copenhagen where time seems to slow. As participants walk across the old moat and onto the fortress grounds, city sounds fade, replaced by tales of Vikings. The crunch of gravel, rustling leaves, and the rhythm of walking create an effortless hygge experience.
- Kastelsmøllen - Kastelsmøllen, the old windmill within Kastellet, is a spot where hygge quietly emerges. Positioned on the ramparts’ edge, surrounded by soft grass and city rooftop views, the mill, though no longer operational, feels alive, part of the historic site’s rhythm.
- The Little Mermaid - With Viking tales in mind, participants will experience Copenhagen’s fairy-tale magic by greeting the iconic Little Mermaid and discovering why appearances can be deceiving.
- Gefionspringvandet - As the tour continues around the Citadel’s green oasis, participants encounter Gefion. Here, they learn about Copenhagen’s origins (Hint: Danes consider it a dark place!) and hear Norse myths from Viking times.
- St. Alban’s Church - While admiring the Gefion Fountain, participants hear about St. Alban’s Church, quietly nestled in Churchillparken, surrounded by gently swaying trees and peaceful paths.
- Churchillparken - Leaving St. Alban’s Church, the tour enters Churchillparken, a tranquil, often overlooked city oasis. It invites visitors to slow down and breathe, with tall trees providing shade and golden autumn leaves creating a soft, hushed atmosphere. The stillness here is deeply hyggelig.
- Frederiks Kirke (Marmorkirken) - On Amalienborg’s grounds, the majestic Marble Church draws attention with its soaring copper-green dome, contrasting beautifully with the sky.
- Amalienborg Museum - The tour reaches the spectacular Amalienborg, the Royal Palace. Arriving in time for the changing of the guards, the guide shares insights about the Danish royal family and insider stories about the Royal Guards, known only to those who have served.
- Changing of her Majesty’s guard at Amalienborg Castle - Observing the Changing of the Guard at Amalienborg is more than a royal tradition—it’s a shared moment of stillness in the city’s heart. As guards in dark uniforms and bearskin hats pass by, there’s a quiet pride and sense of belonging.
- Amaliehaven - Just behind Amalienborg, Amaliehaven feels like a secret garden in the city. With its symmetrical layout, bubbling fountains, and views of the opera house, it’s an ideal spot to escape the guard change crowds and recharge for the adventure ahead.
- Copenhagen Opera House - Walking down Toldboden, participants enjoy stunning views of the Copenhagen Opera House and Operaparken’s peaceful greenery. As they admire the shimmering water and striking architecture, the guide leads them to a nearby spot for a delicious lunch featuring local flavors.
- Nyhavn - Nyhavn’s colorful waterfront and lively atmosphere provide a perfect setting for a hyggelig pause. With iconic canal views and charming old houses, the guide leads participants to a nearby spot for a mouth-watering lunch.
- Copenhagen King’s Square - Kongens Nytorv’s grand square and central location offer a brief, hyggelig moment as participants pass by. Surrounded by elegant historic buildings and lively cafés, they glimpse everyday city life blending with rich history.
- Stroeget - Instead of diving into the busy crowds on Strøget, the main pedestrian shopping street, the tour gently explores quieter side streets where the city’s true hyggelig spirit thrives.
- Nikolaj Kunsthal - Here, the guide encourages participants to admire the spire atop what appears to be a church, but not everything is as it seems in Copenhagen. The guide shares Copenhageners’ views on religion from outside the church and how it influences culture today.
- Christiansborg Slot - Serving as the Danish parliament, the palace is a stop to learn about Danish politics, the welfare system, and the cultural law of Jante. This two-tiered system fosters high trust, contributing to Denmark’s consistent ranking as one of the world’s happiest countries. The guide explains how these concepts relate to Danish happiness and offers tips for personal happiness.
- Soren Kierkegaard Statue I Bibliotekshaven - Bibliotekshaven is a hidden oasis in central Copenhagen, offering a peaceful retreat near the city’s busiest streets. As participants wander its quiet paths and manicured lawns, they discover Søren Kierkegaard’s statue, a tribute to one of Denmark’s greatest thinkers.
- Rundetarn - Passing the impressive Rundetårn, the guide shares stories about King Christian IV and his lasting impact on Copenhagen’s architecture and character.
- Kongens Have - Escaping the urban sprawl, the tour enters The King’s Garden, a beautiful green haven. Here, participants enjoy the spectacular beauty and calm amidst the busy historical inner city. They hear the dramatic story of how the once-royal park became one of the world’s first public parks (Hint: It involves former kings with delusions of grandeur, mental insanity, and inappropriate love triangles!).
- Rosenborg Castle - From Kongens Have, Rosenborg Castle reveals its fairy-tale beauty. In the garden, the castle’s elegant towers and red brick façades invite admiration, standing as a timeless symbol of Danish history and royal tradition.
